A nice pub, plenty of people in there on a Wednesday evening and you could see why (and it isn't just because it's opposite the tube station and near to Waitrose!). A larger range of beers than the otherwise admirable Gloucester - I had Shepherd Neame Spitfire which was fine. rainlight - 12 Jun 2008 09:39
Colleen, are you sure you were in the Stanhope? If the staff are rude, it sounds more like the Hereford down the road. I've always found the Stanhope barstaff to be more than friendly and polite. Amy has now left, but the hardworking team are doing a great job. Yes, many customers are tourists, but there are also a good number of regular local customers too. Natasha_P - 18 Mar 2008 23:00
This has to be the most awful pub in the country, the barstaff are rude and inexperienced, the draught beer is not kept well and the pub is totally geared to tourists who don't know any better. Stay in and don't waste your money. colleenrielly - 1 Mar 2008 21:51
Traditional English pub, selection of English ales and good meals. Very popular with sports fans - big screen used for big soccer matches. Clientele are a lively mixture of tourists and locals. Staff are friendly, fast and helpful - but shame there is such a high turnover rate. No hunky barmen at the moment. Staff are mainly Polish, Australian and Kosovan - and there's a lovely English barmaid who looks like Amy Winehouse. If you're in the South Ken/Gloucester Road area - pop in, you won't be disappointed. Natasha_P - 16 Feb 2008 18:27
Found the Stanhope in Sept 73, as an American abroad for a year, living between Earls Court and Glouchester Rd tube stops, so I'm hardly a current reviewer. More interested in seeing what happened upstairs. Late in 1972, the changed over from the Mississippi Room, a real cool, beat up and down joint which played Dixieland Jazz, to the Basin Street Bar. I played the trumpet in the Mississippi room for beer, 40p a pint, but when they cleaned up the act and brought the union in early 1973, I stopped. The Brits really loved any American jazz, hope something is still there! bradw - 18 Jan 2008 02:12
