Lovely riverside pub in beautiful Ely, What's not to like?

Pleasant riverside pub, good pint of Wherry. However, very crowded and a bit more expensive due to its' riverside situation.

Nice enough pub in a pretty riverside location. Flagged floor and various bits of ship-based artifacts on the walls enhance the nautical theme. The pint of Wherry was excellent and the young barstaff were competent if not attentive. Let down, however, by the following incident. The bar was busy but we found a couple of seats at a table occupied by an elderly women and her silent, scowling husband. We asked if we could sit in the empty seats (we didn't have to as they were unoccupied but we were being polite) and were sniffily waved in. I went to the bar and when I returned with our drinks was surprised to see my wife visibly upset and asking to move to another part of the bar. Once we'd done so, she told me that another woman had joined the couple and, indicating my wife, asked in a loud voice, 'What is she doing there?' Fortunately for this vile woman, I am a peaceable man and did not wade into her and her associates but I was sorely tempted. Now, this of course isn't the pub's fault but we won't be back.

Now something of a victim of its own success: absolutely rammed in good weather, which isn't surprising given its location!

Chicken curry on Sunday - curry fine but chicken dry and fibrous.( This is a criticism of all pubs really ... if only they'd use the leg meat! Breast is almost always dry ... and please leave the skin on: that's where the flavour is!)

However, it's a lovely pub all in all.

Genuinely expensive - a tourist trap that exploits its prime location to charge an extra 20% on the drinks prices. Always packed out and busy on a summer's day due to the boating crowds and the tourists out for a walk along the river. Quality of drinks is fine, but paying 7 for a pint and a soft drink is never that welcome.

Food is quite good (not amazing, but better than average), and the restaurant area is quite nicely done. They've spent a lot of money doing up what used to be a tatty riverside pub into a fairly posh gastropub, but in doing so, they've picked up an eliteist attitude where the staff are not particularly welcoming and the prices are hiked. There's nothign exactly 'wrong' with it I guess.

There are many better pubs in Ely, however if you're not local, The Cutter is the one you'll come to first as it's got prime position.
