| lovely old style pub. enjoyed a great few ales with some charming regulars before suddenly being asaulted by an old crone due overly for retirement. After revealing my identity to her I was continually reminded of my past achievements and treated preferentially as apposed to others awaiting service. The staff were charming until her arrival when I suddenly sensed a bit of tension. I was appalled by the treatment of staff upon her arrival and swore to never frequent her pub again. It is a charming place with potential for alot of character but I'm afraid the cheap facade of candles and homely wood fires does little to hide the fakeness dreggs - 11 Oct 2008 22:44 |
| This used to be my favourite 'winter pub'. Got out of the habit of going there for a few years until the Sun featured on a local TV South Programme. Decided to indulge in some nostalgia. On entry nothing seemed to have changed however although we visited early evening and it was not at the weekend all the tables were reserved. My wife and i were thus forced to stand and after 1 drink made a hasty exit, which was a shame as the beer quality was good. Too much of a restaurant now so won't be revisiting. | Despite appearances, rather a disappointment. Lacks conviviality, atmosphere with mediocre beer TreadGingerly - 28 May 2008 22:33 |
| New bar staff and clearly vastly improved cellermanship in evidence on my last visit - also the food prices have not increased in line with most other Hampshire pubs. Sadly some of the clientele appear to remain on the retentive side, and one party were most surprised to have booked for one o'clock and be told when they turned up well after two fifteen that the kitchen was closed. Not much you can do, though! The smoking ban has clearly improved the ambience here. Definitely on the up. meurglys_iv - 23 Apr 2008 23:09 |
