| Haven’t been to the Royal Oak for many a moon, but when I found myself travelling through Chingford last Saturday and in need of a pint and pub grub, thought I’d look the old place up. And was pleasantly surprised that it seems to have survived modernisation by the IKEA interior designers that have removed the traditional pub feel from so many other McMullen pubs, and still retains its more traditional oak beamed interior. It is still a two bar pub with a separate smaller public bar and then a much larger saloon, laid out in three sections, and a decent outside drinking patio to the side. The full range of McMullen cask ales were on, including the current seasonal beer Sweet Spot, and the two I tried were well kept. The food is traditional pub grub, that wouldn’t have them salivating on Master Chef , but with BOGOF offers which meant our two meals were under £8.00 they hit the spot for what we wanted. | Comfortable, most of the foods ok (have the pie), nothing to complain about. anonymous - 31 May 2007 23:41 |
| The Royal Oak is one of the best pubs in Chingford, but that isn't saying much I'm afraid. The pint I had in there two weeks ago was so cold I couldn't taste the beer, though had a half last night which was better. Other than that, the saloon bar is a very comfortable place to relax over a quiet drink, and the public bar for Sky Sports, bar billiards and darts. The food menu is basic and when last sampled this summer, not all that good. Ginger_Beard - 13 Oct 2006 11:57 |
| I only use this pub at lunch times, but the service is always friendly and helpful. The McMullens beers are well kept and the Country Bitter is a particular favourite of mine. they usually have a guest real ale on as well. A proper pub unlike the overpriced and snobby pub up the road (Kings Head). Food at lunchtimes is also pretty decent. Chris B - 28 Apr 2004 19:23 |
