I lived here in the 1970s as my parents ran the place for about 14 years. Very sad to see it is closed - last had a drink in there at the beginning of 2016. The wood panels, mirrors and brasses should be preserved in any reincarnation. If the upper floors are turned into apartments I wonder what will become of my bedroom!?

Very sad to see this Victorian style boozer get sold off by the Crown for yet more redevelopments. It was a classic feeling boozer not far from the BBC and many other important places yet sufficiently snug feeling and served good ale. It had a certain timeless feel but now lost to us forever.

The George closed on July 2nd 2016. The Crown Estate has planning consent for a major re-development of this and the adjacent building:

15/01327/FULL. "Amalgamation of 55 and 57 Great Portland Street to provide a dual/alternative use of the basement, ground and first floors as either a public house or a restaurant (Class A4/A3) and use of the second to fourth floors as three flats (Class C3).

Classic rather than just traditional, the George is a real pub serving several beers and with its very own brew which I had and which went down well. Deservedly popular also.

I reckon this might be Edwardian or late Victorian. Lots of dark wood and ornate mirrors with a rather dilapidated feel about it. My comfy seat had a rip in it and must have been about 40 years old, and there was paper peeling from the ceiling. But rather welcoming nevertheless, and it was nice to see the barman, who may have been from eastern Europe, taking care to look after a blind customer. 5 real ales were on offer including Doctor Hexter's Healer and 6X. I had a pint of the latter - it was drinkable if a little over-chilled. Food looked a bit expensive - and mainly consisted of steak and burgers. This isn't a bad pub for the drinker given its location so near to Oxford Circus. I'd revisit.
