I don't like drinking anywhere the staff are defensive or borderline hostile - I can go to Bournemouth or Poole for that if I want it. Pubs are part of the hospitality industry aren't they? Not many smiles in here. Sullen attitude seems to sum it up well from the previous review. Nice pint of Doom Bar on guest, but moved swiftly on after the first pint to a comparatively tropical reception elsewhere.

the bugle has always been mooted as a 'proper' pub, real ale, occasional music, garden, not pretentious. on my last visit the beer was awful, staff were sullen and rude and garden was tatty. sorry

A brilliant pub with friendly people, I've had some really good nights at the Bugle.

Moved into the Bugle around 1964 ish.
Used to be a Watney Tamplin pub.
Swapped to Courage in the mid 70s I think, Mum and Dad, Den and Gwen moved out before Iain and Eileen moved in about 14-15 years ago.
As far as we know only one other family of licencees have held the pub and that was the Wells family from when it was built.
Agree with all the other posts ~ has always been a good locals' pub and despite interferences by numerous brewers has a fantastic cellar for keeping beer in good nick (despite the stupid refrigeration plant installed in the 80's!)
Only manage one visir per year but always , still ,receive a very warm welcome! Thanks to Iain and Eileen for keeping up the good work.

Ian & Eileen are like Adam & Eve..... the founders of something beautiful !.. the Bugle is an institution in Brighton... all are welcome (except twats... who WILL be promptly removed).... the beer is creamy/cold/real... depending on your preference... and the parties are legendary !!!!...... bring back Wednesday nights with Ernie and the Chemical Brothers !!
