I had passed this pub a number of times, but had never gone in as the exterior is for some reason off-putting to me. Never judge a book by its cover! I have been in twice this week at lunchtime and was surprised to find within that exterior a pleasant, light and airy pub. The landlady was welcoming and pleasant on both occasions. The HSB as a guest was in tremendous condition, so much so I had to have another! Today we ordered a tuna mayo sandwich, a mature cheddar ploughmans, a pint of Harveys Best (alas the HSB had finished) and a half Kronenbourg, all for £10.90. The previous day we had been charged £10 for two sandwiches in a Tunbridge Wells cafe!
The food was a little slow but the landlady apologised and said there was a problem in the kitchen. She then offered us a free drink in compensation for waiting so patiently, which we graciously accepted. The food arrived and we could not believe the value for money, both were excellent and plentiful. Our drinks and meal were enjoyed and all well within the allotted hour, hardly slow service at all. This pub deserves to be so much busier than it is, an old fashioned boozer of character. It seems to be well supported by its core of regulars and deservedly so. Ah! I nearly forgot, the Harveys was excellent too. The third beer was GK IPA, which I haven't tried as it is far from my first choice.

This pub has recently been given a makeover - hideous Regency Stripe wallpaper removed without, happily, destroying its local boozer atmosphere.

Have Harvey's Best and a guest ale. Menu looks promising but have yet to try it.

Two fires burning in here all winter - a rare treat in TW these days.

Bar billiards still there.

Popped in here whilst in TW for a wedding last weekend - found it to be a nice, hospitable boozer. Very much a local's pub, but one where strangers are welcome. The girl behind the bar told me they'd suffered trade-wise following the smoking ban - so let's hope that traditional pubs such as this don't keep disappearing. Will be back the next time I'm down.

Over the years I've been in the habit of dropping in here if I happened to be in T. Wells around lunchtime, and in the mood for a bite and a pint.
I must say I'm quite amazed at some of the foregoing comments. I've never felt in the least unwelcome or intimidated , either by the staff or the locals. The beer's always been excellent, and as far as I can recall, quite varied as to what was on offer. And they do a mean toastie at bargain prices.
Don't be put off; this is a real pub - give it a crack.

My maiden visit took place recently, primarily on the strength of its entry in the '07 Good Beer Guide. Whilst I would not give this place such a damning report as some previous visitors have seen fit to do, I must confess to having been somewhat disappointed.
Personally I don't mind a pub favouring older clientele, being local-orientated or perhaps slighly rough 'n' ready. Indeed, it is clearly a traditional style boozer that is surely meant to appeal to those who prefer that environment.
And to be fair, the few punters present were actually surprisingly mixed in terms of age (albeit they all looked to be "characters"!), both they and the barman were friendly enough and the place was in reasonable nick, if a little tacky in interior decor terms.
However, unless I was particularly unfortunate, there was little sign of an interesting ale selection, which when one visits a pub with this specific expectation in mind is a little deflating. Okay, the Greene King IPA was actually well kept, but that was the only choice and any self-respecting cask ale quaffer would expect much more. Also there only appear to be 3 pumps, so how the Guide could list at least 4 beers is a mystery!
Might be okay for a quiet pint if you happen to be a traditionalist who doesn't mind the ale situation being a bit routine. But I won't be struggling to get back there as aside from the promise of varied beers, the place was simply average; unexceptional. A shame really as it has much potential.
