The pub will reopen this Friday, 18th May. ANd will be much the same as it used to be, same Manager. About time too!

Below is some up to date info on the pub! Ive cut the senders email and name for their privicy, but this is from a trustworthy source...

Thank you for your enquiry about The Rose and Crown in Greenwich, one of several we've had about the pub.

The exact details of why the pub has closed are tied up in a lot of commercially confidential legal issues which I really can't go into detail about. However, Punch Taverns own a large estate of leased pubs as well as a smaller estate of managed houses. The leased pubs are run by their lessees as their own businesses, whilst the managed ones are under our direct control. The Rose and Crown is currently part of the managed estate and we're planning to re-open it shortly under our direct management while further decisions are made about its future.

I'm afraid I can't give you any exact time scales for this, and our plans may change as we consider our options, but I hope you'll have your local back very soon.

Thankfully, the comment below from 'afootytop'is in error. I have worked in the Rose and Crown and know the Manager and staff, and as yet there is no news on what is happening to the pub. No one even knows exactly why it was shut down. I have also spoken to the Manager of Powder Monkey and he confirmed that as far as he knows, Greenwich Inc is not interested in the pub. Punch Taverns are set to sell 1000 of their pubs, so the Rose and Crown may well be amongst those that go under the hammer. In any case, with a bit of luck, the pub will be open again at some stage!

Rumours have begun to fly from the bar staff at the Rose & Crown, and from the manager of the Powder Monkey (Fred) that Greenwich Inc have just purchased the venue and are planning on closing it down. Hope the rumours turn out to be untrue as this would leave very few bars not under the messianic control of Frank.

In response to the previous comment: unfortunately there is a difference between a gay-friendly pub and a friendly gay pub...

I agree it can seem a bit cliquey but then in a way that's cos for many people it's their local - there always seems to be the same guys propping up the bar anyway! And the fact that there is a gay local in Greenwich has to be a good thing.

I've always felt it quite friendly to be honest. I would urge anyone there on their own to strike up a conversation with another person on their own and before you know it we'll all be friends!

And in response to the story about two guys being stopped from kissing at the bar - just cos it's a gay pub doesn't mean other gays want to watch two people slobbering all over each other in the middle of the day... Would be the same if it was a man and a woman - now there's equality!
