| Decent pub, well kept cask ales. alexw - 27 Aug 2011 13:42 |
| Have to agree with previous comments that this has gone downhill and is now unreliable on quality. However, as pablos12 commented last year, it is generally a nice pub, seems to avoid idiots and obviously seems to be the place to see Manchester United lose, as I did today, alas. oftenscore6 - 4 Apr 2010 00:33 |
| What a huge disappointment this place was. I believe it has been in the GBG in recent years, but has now slipped out. Unsurprising, seeing as looking at previous reviews, the beers never change - and are uninspiring, in Deuchars, Black Sheep and Moonshine. My Moonshine was pretty ropey to be honest, and its not often you get a bad Moonshine in Sheffield. The only positive was the conservatory area which was pleasant to sit in. The barman seemed pretty concerned about asserting how mad his weekend had been to his friend who couldn't seem less interested in how "f****d" he was over the weekend. Perhaps the barman should consider getting a haircut and acting in a more professional manner in front of customers. Sharp - 19 Feb 2010 19:38 |
| A multi-area city-centre local, with a conservatory and small outside smoking area. Three ales were available (Black Sheep, Deuchars IPA and Abbeydale Moonshine) at £2.60p/p. My Moonshine was OK, but a bit flat. The barmaid was perfunctory and seemed more interested in chatting to her friend. The interior is tidy but fairly unremarkable, save for a few old Sheffield Theatre posters dotted around the walls; there are hints that interior used to be a lot more exciting though I imagine it all got ripped out a few years back – the exterior certainly promises more than the interior delivers, certainly. There’s a pool table and good basic food is available (including muffins!?!). The lack of punters meant that the piped music and muted TV dominated more than they should have done. It isn’t bad for what it is, but if you’re on a day trip to the city to drink you’d be best off giving this one a miss unless you’ve got a few minutes to kill before getting a train back. | Superb. Everything a city-centre pub should be, from the polished brass rails around the traditional bar, to the still-present snooker table, the well-kept beer (Caledonian IPA, Black Sheep and Abbeydale Moonshine, an exquisite pale ale) and, most importantly, the atmosphere. Gets very busy on Sheffield United match days (has Sky Sports, which was showing the well-received thraching of Man Utd by Liverpool on my last visit) but doesn't tend to attract the hooligan element and is extremely convenient for the train station, being only an extra 2 minutes walk further than the Howard and the Globe. Cracking little pub. pablos13 - 15 Mar 2009 10:24 |
