I have been frequenting this pub now for a couple of years and I have to say it's nothing less than an enjoyable experience. As I understand it there has been a change of management about three years ago and although I cannot comment on what it was like before i get the impression that much has been done to improve the place.

The pub is very spacious so there are plenty of areas to sit and have a drink on an average afternoon. i can imagine it getting a lot busier for football games and band nights, but that's to be expected. The bar staff all seem warm and friendly, had a good natter with the barkeep about his beer.

Drinks wise they have more lagers on tap than bitters, off the top of my head I think Carlsberg, Becks Vier, maybe Fosters, and the bitter was Brakespeare for a while although it changes periodically. Whilst bitter drinkers might feel disappointed at the lack of selection, the one they do have is always a very good pint and looked after with plenty of care. Wine drinkers now also have a lot more choice, and there are the other usual suspects (bottled beer, alcopops, softs etc).

There is also now a beer garden which overlooks the church tower and remembrance garden, so smokers and sun dwellers are catered for. I also noticed large HD sets and even a 3D screen for the football fans.

All in all a very pleasant experience, recommended.

I recently visited ther Frenchmen and was really disappointed with the level of customer service I received. Both the staff and Landlord were of the opinion that my diet pepsi was flat firstly because I had ice in the drink and secondly because I "wasn't drinking it quickly enough ..." wouldn't visit again!

Found what was the Happy Frenchman only to find that he wasn't that happy anymore and they have renamed it The Frenchman. It seems to have gone a bit upmarket since my last visit and whilst the basic layout is the same they've clearly spent a bit of money on the decor and it's now quite a decent pub. Pool table, dartboard, quiz and fruit machines and a jukebox. It looks like they still have live music events. Just Adnams Bitter on and was in good enough nick for our first two beers of a boozy weekend. Rating gone up from a 4 to a 5.
