Like a lot of pubs, one that changes nature a lot depending on the time of your visit. I imagine this is packed with office workers on a Friday evening, but was very quiet on my visit at ten o'clock on a Saturday night. Nice Nicholson's house, as mentioned by a reviewer below, it is larger than most pubs in this part of town. Very nice selection of ten or so ales; very pleasant, refreshing and well-kept summer ale. Found the staff to be particularly friendly and attentive. Only real issue was a riduiculously loud, rowdy group in one corner; it isn't really that sort of pub, and this lot were annoying everyone else there. Appreciate that this one is tricky for pubs to handle but they were slowly leaking custom to the Goat Tavern across the lane; shame a quiet word couldn't have been had. Overall, by no means a destination pub, but a reliable Nicholson's effort and one of the better stops in the area. 7/10 GibTom - 3 Aug 2011 18:14
A good range of beers on hand pump; not cheap but this is to be expected in Mayfair. Comfortable seating and pleasant, attentive staff (although reading some of the other reviews, maybe I was there at a good time, Saturday evening). 16jamesdoc - 16 Jul 2011 12:07
The Kings Head or Shelly's as it's know to a lot of local workers, is a standard boozer. It has a decent range of ales, including some interesting choices - but quite often they are not kept very well which is a shame and you do get a poor pint fairly often. This pub is always busy due to it's location but is well staffed so it doesn't take too long to get served and is fine for a post work drink but certainly not a destination pub. fury00001 - 22 Mar 2011 16:36
Most pubs in Mayfair are small but the Kings Head is one of the larger ones with two separate areas on the ground floor with dining upstairs and a cellar bar down. I've got a nagging feeling that this place used to have a different name a few years ago - perhaps something literary like Keats or Byron. It's a Ncholsons pub so its mainly dark wood decor and the ale range is pretty extensive. There are ten hand pumps which are split between the two areas - four on one side and six on the other. There are clips attached to bottles on each side of the bar so you know what else is on offer the other side. There were a couple of duplicates on my visit so 8 different ones in all being Pride, Landlord, Doom Bar (all Nicholson regulars in London), Harriestouns Bitter and Twisted, Seafarers, Brew Dog IPA, Cornish Coaster and Lee's Brewers Dark. Hard to see how anyone can complain about that variety. It's also worth noticing the last five are somewhat different to other Nicholsons pubs I have been in recently (notably the Magpie and the Clarence) so there must be some rotation. It was mid-afternoon on my visit so can't describe the evening atmosphere but I liked this place and would return if in the area. murgatroyd - 9 Nov 2010 22:41
10 real ale hand pumps at various points on the bar and on my recent visit during last week, there was no duplication of clips, with the usual Nicholson house ales being complemented by several off the Summer 2010 guest ale list. These included Morrissey FOX Aussie IPA and Thornbridge White Swan and the latter was a very nice pint and well kept. Gann - 25 Jul 2010 12:14
