A wonderful pub, one that makes you smile as you walk in the door. A wee bit expensive but worth every penny to get away from the mindless drones that usually populate Bedford High street. biggingerdude - 1 Jul 2008 11:59
Looked like a typical 'probably best to avoid' town-centre pub from the outside. Inside, there is a strange, brightly-lit area with a pool table at the front and a very long, gloomy bar further back. However, much to my surprise, there were two real ales on (including an excellent pint of Hydes Jeckyll's Gold). Overall, rather better than I was expecting. rpadam - 25 Apr 2008 21:34
I started to drink in the bear in the summer of 2000 and not much has changed in that time apart from the addition of a games room. The regulars are still regular which speaks volumes for the pub itself. Although the bear is an alternitive pub it is a welcome alternitive to the usual barrage of drunken chavs with something to prove. The Bear also boasts one of the best and wide ranging selection of music on their Jukebox. This thing can play everything from Jamiroquai to Cradle of Filth, something for everyone mikkistinge - 9 Jun 2007 19:52
didnt realise this place was open sunday afternoons, quiet pleasant pint, refreshingly different juke box, Everards Old Original available, i thought it was a Greene King Pub (not that i'm complaining) moclips2002 - 25 Mar 2007 22:38
This pub has a lengthy history as a hang-out for Bedford's alternative types. In contrast to the Hobgoblin (which masquerades as something similar but has less character than a Yates' Wine Lodge) The Bear is a genuine alternative pub with a strong scene of regulars and unusual characters. The bar can seem dark and dingy but this is intentional and part of the ambience. They have recently opened a popular games room with a pool table and dartboard. Violence is practically unknown in this pub. It is a hidden oasis of peace and individuality in the hellish onslaught that is Bedford High Street on a Saturday night. greene_man - 13 Feb 2007 12:52
