Popped in the other day on my way home from work (it had been one of those days) - really nice proper old English pub with a nice warm cosy feel. Met by the landlord who took one look at me and knew I was in need of a bit of de stress and he knew when to talk to me and when to leave me be. Not that I drink ale or beer for that matter but there were several ales I didn't know with some unusual names but in general there was plenty of choice. Had my drink, read a couple of papers which were there on a table to pick from and went on my merry way but will definitely pop in again as I was made to feel really welcome and had a very pleasant relaxing hour of me time.

After some months of appalling mismanagement, the White Lion is now closed for the first time in my memory. For how long, no one knows.

Our lunchtime stop today, on a circular walk from Wendover. It had been a fairly muddy tramp - nothing too demanding, and we weren't the first in. Tring Brewery Side Pocket was just the right side for refreshing. Two of the others tried Wytchwood's Hobgoblin preferring the warming malty flavor. A tad disappointing was the food - scampi and chips for two of us, vegetable soup for me (I'm afraid it wasn't homemade, more Heinz catering can), and for some reason a baked potato and filling, and a sandwich, took another 20 - 30 minutes to follow on. It was warm and friendly though the grate was cold, and Molly was rather insistent on playing ball. Once started she wouldn't take no for an answer.

A cheerful and helpful serving from behind the bar, and the young helper made for excellent service. Definitely coming back!

Revisted on our way back from the KOP Hill Climb on Sunday 26th Sept (pouring rain, open cars!) to receive a warm welcome, excellent beers and great service. (The log fire was also extremely welcome!)
