The Crown is tucked away off the main road and away from the centre of Bacup. But it made for a reasonable start to a crawl of Lancashire pubs. We were there for opening at midday on Boxing Day. One other local/regular had also arrived in a taxi in time for the opening of the doors. He seemed a bit of a character, with a good sense of humour. The pub is nicely appointed with a couple of rooms. A buffet was being prepared in one room for later in the day. Pictish Brewer's Gold is the regular ale. But they also had 3 guests - Shefford Plum Mild, Reedley Hallows Clausing Time & Ilkley Mary Christmas.

Visiting friends in the area and attending a busy beer festival at this pub I was amazed at the unprofessional attitude of the landlady! We were a large group of 8 people and we had several rounds of drinks, however when two were drinking the same drink for a second pint, something had definitely gone wrong as it was flat and tasted strange, upon returning them to the bar, expecting at least the offer of a replacement, they were told that they were two of many drinking the same and it was not a complaint repeated by the other drinkers. ( it also wasn't a problem with the first two pints either) no apology or investigation as to why the pub served 2 flat pints. Been a licensee myself I know that if the gas goes so does the beer and cider quality. We left! The next day I experience a further disturbance when a regular who had been seated outside with his dog entered the pub through an entrance which was open on both occasions and sat inside. He was verbally attacked by the landlady because apparently the pub has a no dogs policy, even though I had seen a rather large dog roaming within the bar, barking and growling at the band as they packed up. The said landlady then proceeded to have a discussion which I discreetly listened to with on other member of staff saying there was a big sign saying no dogs, it turned out that the aggressive dog was the owners of the pub, and the sign was indeed located on the window of the far side entrance, I made a point of looking for it as I whole heatedly disagree with double-standards. A shame that this attitude spoiled a good weekend!

Visited for the first time on Saturday lunchtime and had a couple of pints of good quality, local beer. There were a few regulars sitting at the bar and the place was nice and relaxed. Friendly and efficient service.

I've been going in The Crown for about 10 years and it was a little gem. One of the few pubs in Bacup where you could go and enjoy a drink with friends, without feeling that a fight was going to break out any minute. Alot of that was down to Trevor, a previous landlord who like Basil Fawlty kept the riff-raff out. The younger clientele who went in were well behaved.
Unfortunately the current landlady seems to have let all that lapse. When I went in last week it was full of very rowdy youths and much of the atmosphere has gone.
If you go in on a quiet night it can still be very nice and the food and beer is excellent. It's just a shame the current owners have let it go downhill.

Wonderful place, excellent staff, super beer and top Black pudding salad! One annoying thing about this place, it's a 220 mile round trip for me to get here, bah!
