| I'm working in Saudi Arabia at the moment but visited Dubai along with three mates - one of whom was celebrating his 40th birthday - last weekend. We arrived on the Wednesday night (being a Muslim country the weekend is Thursday/Friday) and somewhat bizarrely a phalanx of workers appeared with various building materials and completely altered the nature of the bar during our stay! No matter, because the bar staff were very friendly and efficient and produced some cake for my mate Pete on the stroke of midnight, a gesture which was much appreciated. Various bottled beers and a large selection of spirits. We were drinking Amstel for much of our visit and also consumed a monstrously powerful and expensive cocktail, the name of which is lost in the mists of time. Good cross section of people drinking in the bar and Mick Hucknall was spotted although he didn't enter the bar presumably because there wouldn't have been room for his vast entourage. Apologies if we weren't more sympathetic to your obvious unhappiness but as you probably gathered Pete and Bert were well oiled and celebration of Pete's birthday was the order of the day after all. And you'll never convince us that we're having a better time in Saudi than you are in Dubai. Had I been alone, I'd like to think that I would have been more sympathetic so can only apologise again.
