user reviews of the Claude Hotel, Cardiff

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

On my one visit to The Claude we sat on the "old man's" side but were still able to hear one of the worst covers bands ever from the other bar. They played mostly Stereophonics songs and we joked that they were probably called the Monophonics. And guess what, we were right. We wondered if the hairy bloke that got kicked out of the real 'Phonics was the drummer, although as we never ventured over to the much busier side of the pub we never found out. Instead we supped on our ales (not a bad selection, which seems to thankfully be the norm for Cardiff) and watched as a mildly cute girl in a pink t-shirt went to the toilets at least 6 times in just over an hour. For some reason she seemed more agitated and with increasing sniffles every time she came out! She left with a big, fat geeky bloke too which was interesting.

Nice old building, OK beers on tap but is the sort of place that could and should be better. Losing the pool tables and turning away it's admittedly small number of yob customers would be a start. Should move a little more up-market to reflect growing status of nearby areas like Wellfield Road.

This pub is one of the best in Cardiff.
Always a friendly atmosphere.
Food is avaliable, at very reasonable prices. It only costs £2 for a main meal. The food is really nice.
Sundays are really good down there. Every sunday there is a dj and he plays old motown music and r'n'b.

Nice Two-Part pub as has been previously mentioned.
Old-style boozer small, busy and cozy, with plenty of conversation to be had.

I whipped out a crib board and had friends within minutes!

A pub of two halves. On one side a large young-people's pub with pool tables and regular DJs and live music. Many TVs for sporting events etc.

The other side is a smaller older-style Cardiff boozer with a friendly atmosphere. Apparently this bit hasn't changed much in 20 years (it was my wife's local when she was a student).

Real ales are available but I don't think they're kept very well so not really recommended. Not sure whether food is available.
