user reviews of the Britannia, Marlow

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I was surprised to see a McMullen's pub outside of Hertfordshire. But sure enough, this was is thriving in Marlow with a fairly young crowd and some families. As the previous reviewer states, there is a lot of glass. Watch the pane by the door. You can easily walk into it. There is a garden at the rear with decking split between smoking and non-smoking areas. The inside is bigger than it first seems with most areas set aside for dining. We also noted a spit roast. The 3 McMullen's ales were AK, IPA & HMS Britannia.

Let me get the slight negative out of the way, they only do their own real ales not a policy that a beer snob like me approves of. Everything else, however, is a positive. McMullens have loads of money I heard and they have spent a shed load on this pub, completely gutting it and transforming it into some glass space ship that seems to have landed on a field in Marlow. Actually it has a nautical theme, so perhaps more cruise ship than space ship, certainly not 19th century war ship. All the glass makes it feel spacious but there are different areas for drinking and eating. I'll return.

What an amazing pub, surrounded by the Marlow snowfields, an oasis with a big neon sign shouting 'Britannia'. A traditional English pub it is not!! Glass partitions everywhere. I liked it a lot & certaintly a bit alternative. Not sure what the paint pots on the side of the wall are - still clearing up? Good range of McMullens beers on - I tried the Elixer. Not a fan of their beers but it was well kept.

Soon to be part of McMullens pub chain.
