I visited with a friend last night at the end of a "crawl" in Waltham Abbey. It was about 10.30 and my drinking companion and I were the only drinkers in the pub. Although the McMullens AK was on perfect form and the staff afforded us a warm welcome, the visit was tinged with a little sadness. This is an ancient, heritage pub, full of character and seriously under threat from under-use. With this review comes a plea from the heart - Use this pub or lose a major part of the village's heritage. It would be very unfortunate for the town if the Welsh Harp were to close. The landlady last night told us that it is on a knife-edge. Surely it can't survive on two people coming up from London once a year - Use the pub to keep it open! lad_newton - 24 Jul 2008 00:33
Excellent. I popped in during a visit to Waltham Abbey yesterday (05/09/07). Staff and locals (Michael, Lee and others) were very friendly and afforded me a welcome fit for a VIP. Since I last visited a year or two back, the pub remains unchanged, still keeping the Mac's ales in good condition. AK and Country were the better-tasting of these. Tasted "Cask" for the first time, rather like Greene King IPA in flavour and texture. Kind of them to make the special effort to provide food at a time it was not normally available; thanks Michael for that. I enjoyed the pub so much it is worth making a repeat journey to spend and evening there. lad_newton - 6 Sep 2007 13:00
Ancient, probably medieval, pub with wonky beams, right next to Waltham Abbey and the town’s main drag, Sun Street. A very characterfull place. The local morris dancers drink in here after their shows. Greshon - 16 Feb 2007 09:46
Eio's comments made me laugh. He went there in 1979 - probably a bit late to comment on the place 25 years later! It could be great here, but is in fact average. Good building, bit it looks rather tatty inside. At 8pm Saturday night it was dead (3 old men). Perhaps it gets more busy at other times? tuppence - 31 Aug 2006 02:18
Sorry to hear of Eio's bad experiences here - ours were simply of a friendly country pub with crooked walls, keeping McMullen's Country Bitter in very good condition (My mate and I had two jugs of it each). The landlord's friendly, and the pub was very relaxed at closing time because there's no trouble here (or at least it seemed like that). The fourth, and last pub on what had turned out to be an excellent crawl of Waltham Abbey Village, well worth the mile-or-so walk from Waltham Cross station. jamie.nakin - 3 Sep 2005 15:41
