| I popped in on Saturday for the 1st time since I worked there 12 years ago. I feel that Bass (ok, M&B now) have made a dreadful mistake in converting this into a gastro pub. The place was dead quiet - ok I know there's a recession on but even so... It used to be packed on a Saturday afternoon/evening. The pub looked cold with its dull paintwork. It did however look great from the outside and on the approach from Guildford. One wierd thing, the (closed) public bar area is still in situ despite a major refurb. Perhaps they might contemplate opening it again, to get some real local trade back! Lastly, the barmaid pulled a very flat pint of pride for my friend, whist pouring a lager at the same time. Not a good move! robhealy - 8 Jun 2009 14:52 |
| I'd agree with the recent comments - this place was better before the refurbishment. That said, it's not awful but I don't especially care for this style of pub. London Pride and TEA on offer for the ale drinkers, which were ok but not top quality. pubcollector - 31 May 2009 21:14 |
| A country pub spoilt (or enhanced, depending on your viewpoint) by a Italian-esque 'makeover' inside. There's nothing traditional here. The food is trying to be special. It's quite pricey. We had a pizza which was pretty good actually. The beers are premium and pricey. Aspall cider. It's not really a pub any more. goosegog - 11 Jan 2009 17:12 |
| I can imagine that many people looking for a country pub will be disappointed by the interior design, but personally I quite like it (and, yes I can recall the days of a proper public bar which was great) because they have not tried to simulate ye oldie worldie effect. The food is OK the staff are, generally, good the beers are good but some of the adequate wines are very overpriced: £4 for a standard glass of Pino Grigio out of a box is extracting the Michael. | My husband and I have been going to this pub for years (we planned our wedding in this pub :) - Since its refurbishment this pub has been ruined. It has been turned into a pretentious gastro-nightmare - complete with glass doors with the pub name etched on them , cow hide chairs , rams skulls on the red painted walls , asking if we had booked ( on a quiet Wednesday evening) - and then going off to ask the permission of the manager if it was ok that we could come in. Serving oven chips in a bowl with aioli along with a greasy chicken covered in tomato puree does not a gastro experience make. Then there were the arty photos in the toilets of naked women with rams skulls on.... When my husband said he would be disappointed if he got this food in Harvester - he was told by the waitress to go there in future....Nice :) Rozzie - 16 Nov 2008 00:09 |
