I haven't eaten in here since the refurb but in terms of ale and decor then its a big thumbs up from me. The place is much more welcoming for people just wanting a pint. Handy if The Southampton is too mobbed to handle. All the ale I've tried so far has been well kept and the bar staff are friendly and quick to serve. BlueMoon - 20 Dec 2011 16:21
So, the review below. You had two enjoyable nights, then one non-enjoyable night, and you give us the latter in great detail. Why not tell us all about the two enjoyable nights? Is this what the internet has become? Really? Never been in the Vine but I was on here looking for a pub in this locale for tonight so I'll bloody well go to this one now just to stick it up 'TheInquisitor'. cid - 22 Nov 2011 18:31
I have been here for food three times since the re-opening. My first two visits were enjoyable, good food and nice choice of beers. However last night I took a few friends and we received shockingly bad service. My friend ordered a mozzarella salad, and unfortunately the cheese they served her had gone bad. She returned it immediately. The kitchen sent not one, but three different members of staff to tell her "the chef just wanted you to know he checked the cheese himself and it is fine". How insulting. My friend tells the third staff member that this is getting silly and she just wants to order something else. The staff member responds by charging her the difference for the replacement meal. A replacement for bad dairy that could have made her ill. And of course, once my friend has paid for and waited on her replacement, the rest of us have finished eating. Then we got ignored at the bar. I think I will spend my hard earned money elsewhere in future. TheInquisitor - 16 Oct 2011 15:46
@milfer - well you're right about the high prices, but then again The Vine was pricey even before it was given a makeover, so I wasn't expecting anything else. But the beer is fine (Camden lager - great but £4.10 a pint! It's £3.40 just up the road at the Southampton Arms!) - and on the two occasions I've been there so far the service has been really good. Generally I think the upgrade has been done well - ok it's a gastro, but it was before anyway and had lost its way. The bar area has been extended and there seems a lot more space and tables in there now, and it feels lighter and airier than before. There's a separate dining area at the back and also at the front, which is split between eating and drinking area at the very front - though no doubt some diners there won't appreciate the fag smoke wafting up at them from below! However that won't bother me as I won't be eating there. puppyfeat - 3 Aug 2011 06:17
cmofish. Your right about GK. But via real pubs. Expect rude service, shabby beer, high prices. A pity, could be good, but with it's location it's between too many great places. It would have to be fantastic to compete. I will check it out & happily eat my words if I'm wrong. But my few experiences at the Oxford don't fill me with good expectations. milfer - 7 Jul 2011 00:57
