Great location, decor not to bad. Drinks are limited, toilets are go in at own risk !! basically the pub isnt to bad... But staff are abit tired in the approach to customer relations... Fri & Sat nights always seem to end up in trouble, i saw one of the worst fights ive ever seen in there so i tend to give this place a miss due to that reason

There's no reason why The Nelson can't be much more successful. It's in an ideal location just a short walk from Wood Green tube station. All it needs is for its management and staff to serve, not themselves, but their customers.

The reason you don't see anyone in here unless there's a big football match on is because the management and staff can't be bothered to engage customers. Period. Once they've got your money they uniformly swing away - even when there's no one else to serve. How to win customers's loyalty and bring them back... Not.

Sad.

I have been using this place as my local for well over twenty years now, and every landlord has had their good and bad points, as does this one. Usually they start off being keen on the job and willing to serve, but after a while they become slipshod and leave the running up to the bar-staff. For want of a better name call it 'The Nelson Syndrome' and it gets to everyone in the end. Some sooner than later. Billy has been here longer than most and it now shows in attitude and service, both of which have declined from very good beginnings. At one point this pub had three regular real ales on sale, including a mild, with an occasional guest ale. Mind you this was a few years back when real ale was becoming popular once again. Again last night (a Monday) there was none with scant chance of having any before the weekend! This place still has a lot of potential which has still yet to be recognized and released, and in my opinion will not do so if it continues to focuses so much on football and fizz to the exclusion of other interests. I am told that there is no demand for real ale in this place. Well if it is not on offer there will be no demand as people will have gone elsewhere. A self fulfilling prophecy that much confused thinking is based upon. The other pubs in the area that still continue to sell real ale have bums on seats and are earning money. The other pubs also sell food.
I could continue but looking at some of the previous posts I find that they cover most of the salient points that I would like to make.
This is a pub that needs a bit of direction.

I'm so glad DollyBoy that someone else has picked up on the lack of cellar craft in the Nelson. Only one proper beer (IPA) is ever on offer and it's not rocket science to have a fresh barrell ready to go when one runs out. Not so here! One, two, three or maybe four days go by before someone gets around to putting the new barrel on. I thought the idea was to sell beer so that your customers could piss it out, not piss on (off) your customers. Consistency, quality of service and stock control seem to be concepts that have yet to filter through to the management here, but what do they care. Lazy, bone idle or what, I don't know, but other pubs seem to manage the trick of having some beer in stock and ready to go. If you really need a pint of IPA around Wood Green you do not go to this Greene King pub. Still the summer holidays will be here soon and landlord Billy will be off to his villa in Cyprus leaving the great Pete in charge. Everything seems to run much more smoothly then. Billy idle as a landlord, now there's a thoug

Hot and empty. The air con is just two industrial fans that drown out what conversation there is and only one is for the public. The other is just for the staff. No cooling, just moving the air about. It's beyond belief that they can get away with such conditions these days. Still there was ice for our gassy drinks at least. Yes, there was no beer, Unless you count keg IPA smooth as beer. A charmless place.
