My first viisit for pprobably over 20 years and I was pleased to see that it had not,in general, changed from those days. "Nellies" is an absolute classic boozer with stone floors; old benches; gas lighting; ocre walls; an assortment of old furniture and bric-a-brac everywhere. Central servery with Sam.Smith's beer on tap and when I ordered 3 pints of bitter I got change from a £5 note (yes-it was only £1.59 a pint!!!!) According to my mate the chap behind the bar was a new landlord so things seemed to have improved from that side is he and the other customers were all very friendly and had no objections to us taking photos of the pub. They have added a pool room at the back and there are a couple of incongruous fruit machines but apart from that it is superb and is a "must visit" pub - we travelled up from Hull on the train to visit this place and it was well worth it. You cannot to go to the East Riding of Yorkshire without having a beer in Nelleis. mcroyal - 29 Aug 2011 10:58
The best pub in the country !! Old !!! Old decor with Victorian gas lighting, open fires, marble-topped, cast iron framed tables. I remember it when Nellie was the landlady and there was no bar, only casks held by the wall. The Sammy Smith's beer is still as good, as it should be, given that it comes from a well 162 years' old. Unfortunately, I now live far south in Hertfordshire, so only get to Beverley once a year. johncuth - 30 Jun 2011 17:07
I agree with the last revuer a great pub but the gents is terrible and the smell puts you off going in there. Unfortunatly we are back to square one with landlords as another has gone! So come on Sam Smiths get this pub sorted out. Still the cheapest and most popular in beverley, highly recommended but avoid the gents! noggin46 - 24 Mar 2011 20:23
We are very lucky in Beverley to have such a great pub. The beer is usually excellent and still very cheap. Havibg recently gone throuigh troubled times, it now has new welcoming hosts. The only things that make the pub unwelcoming are when the fires are not lit (the only form of heating? and crucial to the atrmosphere in winter) and the state of the gents toilet (simply needs a thorough clean and preferably decorating). Get these sorted and it would rate '10'! Teach - 24 Jan 2011 18:26
Yes, a Proper Pub [not an pretend hotel lobby or airport lounge] a few seconds' walk from the Bus Station. Sam Smith's range - 'Taddy Lager' £1.70-odd - full of character and 'characters'. So 'realistic' that it's almost not real, if that makes any sense. Like a cartoon version of a real boozer, except that you're in it! Malcoholist - 18 Nov 2010 18:11
