The reviewer below is correct ,this is a regular haunt of mine and Angela and Ron (new landlords) are a delight. The usual Sam Smiths stuff ,well kept ale, great prices for this part of town and a good mix of clients such as students, nutty proffesors, suits, thearte goers from some northern mining village and some very pretty girls. Bar staff are friendly and superbly efficent as it gets rammed on a Friday evening but you will still get served, lovely small terrace to the rear with a few seats. Best pub and far and away the best landlords in this part of town, you should go there!! jackbar - 11 Feb 2012 13:36
I happen to know that a new landlord and landlady will be taking over this pub this week and they used to be where I currently drink and I can say the punters there are very lucky as they will get a good pint and very honest to goodness tasty grub from now on All the best Ange and Ron and good luck for the future susie.p - 9 Jan 2012 22:47
I often frequent sam smiths pubs but after last week I wont be going to the crown again. I was having a delightful evening enjoying the beer (although not the price increase) and the food up until the end of the evening. When it came to the end of the evening and kicking out time the member of staff so keen to get everyone out the door was incredibly rude! I dont know if he was management or not (tall dark haired youngish and irish) but the force he was trying to rush people out the door with no forewarning and sweeping your full pints away from your table in between sips made me incredibly irate. After a nice evening in the pub that particular bar man and his attitude put me off frequenting that establishment again and ruined a nice evening. drinkerHC - 23 Dec 2011 17:41
Good quality beer at reasonable prices. A great place for a leaving do, especially when your boss is buying the first round. whitedw6 - 4 Feb 2011 16:32
I came here for lunch the other day and it was dreadful. In short: The coke I ordered tasted like that cheap and nasty Panda Cola. It was also flat. Stupidly, I opted to get some food there as well. I ordered a Cumberland sausage batty. It consisted of a single piss-poor, overcooked, crispy, dry, puny cold sausage, split in two and plonked into a piss-poor, overcooked, crispy, dry bread roll with a side order of equally piss-poor crispy, dry, cold chips. My friend’s lasagne looked like yoghurt. There’s no service. You get the food yourself. You are expected to guess when your food is ready because there is no announcement and no one brings your food to you. Moral of the story – don’t eat there. Ever. Yahoodlum - 20 Aug 2009 15:04
