user reviews of the Crab and Lobster, Sidlesham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not a lot has changed in the 6 years since Blackthorn posted a review. We had an interesting walk from Selsey around Pagham harbour. Very busy on a Saturday lunchtime but we were found a table. Although the food was expensive it was very good and an interesting range of deserts. The building is a typical former Henty & Constable (Chichester brewery) pub and has been modernised. Unfortunately little positive can be said about the 2 real ales that were served. The first tried was Langham Jester but was cloudy.. The other was Arundel Gold and was also cloudy. I didn't feel there was much point complaining about the beer quality as the emphasis is clearly on food and I don't think the landlord would have been interested.

Pleasant enough pub in a nice spot, although its clearly geared more towards food than drinking. Its got a smart/trendy wine bar type appearance with a tiled floor, leather chairs with lots of cushions scattered around and dark wooden tables laid up with white linen serviettes and silver cutlery.

On a recent Sunday lunch time there was only one small table squeezed in to a corner that wasnt laid up for food, so its not really a welcoming place for drinkers. Similarly theres quite a small bar area, probably more used by staff for table service than punters. That said, they were pleasant enough though and didnt seem to mind us just stopping for a pint. It was just the whole ambience of the place that wasnt really conducive to that. There were three or four staff just loitering around as well with apparently not much to do, presumably because they were only about half full. In order to pay for all those loitering staff, they obviously need to charge quite a bit for the food, with most of the starters being around the 7/8 mark.

Beers on offer were Hepworth Sussex and Doom Bar, plus Stowford Press cider. Since this is BITE and not FITE (Food In The Evening) I feel obliged to award a fairly low mark. What it does, it probably does very well, and Im sure if you want to go out for a nice meal its a good place to go (or maybe not, going on some of the other comments on here from people who have eaten here!). But I cant honestly say its a great pub.

visited this pub for a snack meal on 28 December. I agree with the other reviews, the food was pretentious, average/poor and highly overpriced. the service was awful. the beer was in dreadful condition and the coffee luke warm. never never again, 35 badly spent- dont go there!

Our party of walkers were really looking forward to Sunday lunch at the Crab & Lobster. We arranged to meet some friends at the 'pub'? together we made up a group of ten. Set in a glorious location the setting in the bar was really inviting. Our table was beautifully laid out, beyond that the good turned to. I choose the crab salad, 'expensive at 17.50' but I expected a treat. I did'nt get it. All the food was hideously overpriced and nowhere was this backed up by any quality. When the waiter asked if everything was all right I replied 'not really', he did not ask the reason & he stayed away from our table after that. To sum up. A pretentious, overpriced establishment who only survive because of the well heeled locals must have more money than sense. I give it a 2. One mark for the table & another for the view, though the owners had little to do with that. 'Highly unrecommended'. And the beer was awful.

I was disappointed with this pub. Really it's just a restaurant with a small beer garden out back, which doesn't make the most of its views over Pagham Harbour. One beer, not well kept, at a tiny bar.

Staff were fine, particularly as the clientele were of the kind that think they own the world and were not treating them very well. I got shouted at despite driving very carefully down the road as a posse of them were walking towards the pub all over the road.

I am sure the food is great, but I will not be back to check that out.
