| This is a decent back street local that has been refurbished since my last visit which considering my only criticism previously would have been it's slightly down at heel appearance, this is now one of the best pubs in Clevedon without a doubt. Despite being only one road back from the sea front, the fact that it's not facing the beach means that it remains undiscovered by many of the area's day trippers who gravitate towards the bigger and brasher pubs that are somewhat more prominent. The pub sits in amongst terraced houses in a quiet residential street and consists of two rooms. The main bar at the front has wood flooring, along with wood panelling on the right hand side along with a sturdy wooden bar counter. To the left is a large stone fireplace with a wood burning stove. The seating is mostly conventional tables and chairs with some black vinyl bench seating in front of the large window. There is much nautical memorabilia around which is I suppose fitting given the pub's location even though it's not reflected in it's actual name. A ship's wheel, bell and part of a mast were on one wall, and there were several nautical pictures around as well as the obligatory display of different types of knot. The pub's notice board of community events was titled The Ship's Log. There is another, large open room down a few steps at the rear although we did not investigate this. Beers on tap were McMullen County Bitter, Doom Bar, Butcombe and London Pride. Ciders were all from Thatcher's with their Dry, Gold and Traditional. Blackthorn - 29 Apr 2013 11:22 |
| Step back just a little from Clevedon sea front, set in a particuirly pretty part of Clevedon is the Royal Oak. This pub provides relief from the more food friendly pubs on clevedon sea front. A really nice old fashioned pub, with a log fire. In all the pubs I went to in Clevedon I have to say the Bar service was very good, but this was exceptional. | Clevedons Gem.A must for all serious Alers. A pub how it should be . The quaffing of excellently kept Ales, with good socialising,and excellent hosts. A warm welcome is the first thing you get here followed by the well kept Ales. Light snacks i.e pannini's etc plus the usual crisps/nuts. It's pub of the year 2010 proudly adorned and very well deserved. You can read by the other comments that this place is not a flook. | This is a tremendous, cosy, friendly pub in the midst of a pretty,terraced street...just a stone's throw from the Sea Front & Pier.. The Real Ales are extremely well kept, and very consistent....Butcombe Bitter & Fuller's London Pride are the regulars, with a good selection of rotating guests, including Butcombe Gold, Bath Ales Wild Hare, St Austell Proper Job IPA and many more... They also have a keen following for their Real Ciders, with 2 Thatchers on tap, and a number of excellent Bottled offerings... It is a pub strongly frequented by Local Drinkers of all ages, which gives a vibrant mix, and there is no jukebox etc, so the atmosphere is generated by all the banter of the incumbents....a top hostelry, that is welcoming to all ...
