user reviews of the Water Rat, Ripon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nice views over the river to the cathedral but pub does look a bit shabby. Theakston's Best, Adnams Broadside and Rudgate's Viking and Jorvik were on sale - I tried the two Rudgate beers which were both decent enough but not as good as the beers in Masham. From looking at some other pubs in Ripon, we probably didn't do too badly here though.

Nice feel but inside feels a bit tired. staff are friendly. Most seating overlooks the river in an extension or outside - nice setting. Good beer. Good pub food. When I looked at their website it gave me the impression it was a nasty chain pub which it is not. Short walk from town. You might miss it as the sign from the main road says something like riverside pub rather than the name. Do a good food special on a Wednesday eve - one of their main dishes and a chosen pudding for a crazily cheap price which none of us chose of course.

Visited for a quick pint prior to a race meeting at Ripon Racecourse which is some ten minutes walk away.
Most drinkers were sat outside overlooking the river which does give it a nice enough setting.
It is hard to comment on the normal selection of real ale, as on this occasion, the bar was supported by a seperate temporary bar as they were holding a small beer festival - as a result the choice was very good with numerous local beers on offer including York, Rooster and others I cannot recall !
First visit so don't know what the pub is like when busier, but based on this, I would certainly drop in again if in Ripon

Large pub with conservatory next to the river Skell,so close in fact that it has been flooded in the past. Formerly called the Alma, it used to belong to the same people as the Nelson, which became the One Eyed Rat - the then owners being "Rodent Inns". Basically open plan but with a dark secluded area with sofas by the bar, a brighter area with lots of seats and tables as food is a big part of their business, the afore mentioned conservatory is also set up for dining and there is a little snug type area by the front door. Three handpumps with Black Sheep bitter, Deuchars and Adnams in reasonable condition.
