GK house with standard GK range of beers which were well kept and served. Still has a friendly local pub feel despite obvious food leanings. Good stop off on way to the One Eyed Rat. Oh, and as that short walk takes you past one of the best fish and chip shops in England I didn't try the food. robf - 30 Apr 2012 10:46

Called into the Golden Lion for a pint with my partner while visiting Ripon. What a great pint. The food looked really good so we decided to stay for lunch. I had the homemade pie, chips and peas and my partner had the giant homemade yorkshire pudding with sausage, roast potatoes and onion gravy, I must say it was the best pub food I have had for a longtime, Homemade chips what were lovely, The pie was just how my granny used to make, The yorkie looked and tasted fantastic and both meals for just £10, a bargin. The staff were lovely they even tempted us with puddings, I had homemade cheesecake, beautiful. What a treat to find such great pub. garry99 - 11 Aug 2011 10:13
Visited this pub on the strength of the reviews, especially of the homemade chips which some people had raved about. Not sure if the chef has changed since 2010 but the chips were awful - like thin-cut oven chips, overcooked to within an inch of their life and were swimming in gravy. The food reminded me of motorway service station food - tasteless and overpriced! I ordered cumberland sausage which came with the chips and frozen peas and was definitely not worth the £8.95 I paid for it. My partner had the pie which also came with said chips and peas and that was £9.95. Very overpriced for a town centre pub and I definitely wouldn't recommend it for food and won't be returning. babs48 - 8 Aug 2011 12:02
