Came across this pub on one of our cycle rides just before 12 o'clock on a monday. Despite our early arrival, the landlord kindly opened up for us so we could get a drink and warm up by the fire. A nice pint of Spitfire followed and we certainly warmed up by the fire. The landlord was a very freindly bloke from Zimbabwe and we found plenty to talk about, which is always nice when you are the only people in the pub! Seems to be quite food orientated, however, this was not too detrimental to the whole pub experience

My husband and I visited the Wheelwrights last Sunday for Mothers Day with my daughter and grand-daughter. Our table was booked for 2.15 pm and the place was heaving, absolutely packed. We had a fantastic meal, my daughter and I had the open lasagne which was squash and goats cheese with a pesto sauce - I could eat that every day of the week it was heavenly, my daughter thought the same. My husband opted for the roast rib of beef and said it was really tasty, lovely bit of beef. We had chocolate fondants and bread and butter pudding for desserts which were also well above par. All in all (husband also said it was the best pint he had drunk for a very long time) we had a really enjoyable mothers day meal and we felt good value for money with quality ingredients, not frozen ready meals bought in like some pubs dish up.

Have just this week been for an utterly delicious meal, I had a fantastically different risotto (beetroot with chocolate reduction) and my partner had a beautifully cooked ribeye steak that was, he said, perfect, with the best home made chips he had ever tasted!!
I thought I would add a review as the pub has only just been taken over again (May 2011) and the lovely friendly young couple now running it seem to be a breathe of fresh air. They have started to have the furniture reupholstered, fresh flowers, painted the outside and generally seem to be getting the old place back on its feet. It is a cosy pub with hops hanging from the beams and great atmosphere. I must say it was a pleasure to visit and we will definitely go back to eat next time we are in the area. 100% improvement from last time we visited in February.

Haven't been here for about 5 years. There have been changes to make the place more lighter, and I think some partitions have come down to make it more open. Old dark wood tables have been replaced by brighter wood. Beer choice was good and the Whitstable & Spitfire were in good form. Matfield has 3 good pubs, all along the road that runs through the village which is served by a bus that runs up to 11pm on the Tun Wells and Paddock Wood route. This and the other two pubs, the Star, and Morrels (formerly Standings Cross), could form part of a pub crawl in the area. Walking across fields from here could include the Hopbine and Halfway House in Brenchley.

Went here on Sunday both before and after a nice walk in the Kent countryside. Despite a manic lunchtime serving many meals the staff were cheerful and courteous. A good couple of pints of Spitfire and excellent ham, egg and chips with delicious home-cured ham. Others had tasty fish n chips and a vg house burger... Recommended!
