| had a great night last Friday(18.5.2012)made to feel very welcome .We were meeting up with a friend we hadn,t seen for 30 0dd years(I live in Aussie) and purely by coincidence met up in here with 2 more old friends .Great night was had by all,ideal pub for a chat and a good drink(no yobs !!!!) foxykate - 21 May 2012 18:20 |
| Pub has now been re- opened , albeit on a temp basis as enterprise inns still might want more commitment from the savior who is Jeff. He is trying to keep to the same winning formula the pub had always had , I wish him luck and promise to support him and the pub more. Still has the top quality Taylor's landord , a fantastic pint ! Theakstons best and pendle witch also regulars . Food is always fresh cooked and reasonable prices and has General knowledge and music quiz every week on a Tuesday & Thursday resp. | Pub is sadly no more, I believe it closed down some weeks ago? Was by no means a regular (and perhaps therefore in part to blame) but I enjoyed a number of good pints in the Vale over the past few years, and it will be missed in the event that it doesn't re-open. During the Industrial Revolution, the village was submerged in a tide of sooty brick and became a manufacturing area, notably heavy engineering and locomotive building. That prosperity vanished, leaving... not much. Vale Cottage, however, not only survived but retained its country feel. It is surrounded by trees, bedecked with flowers in pots and whitewashed. The bar still has the old black beams – taller patrons instinctively duck their heads and walk about hunched over – and there is a comfy cottage “best room” feel. Everything that can be polished is buffed, and its decor comprises gradually accreted bric-a-brac and old photos of the pub. I ask John Smith, the landlord, how this has happened. “Care and attention,” he replies. “The place has only had four landlords in a hundred years.” Vale Cottage was the Greater Manchester Camra pub of the year in 2006. It was also home territory for the Gorton Morris Men, who have recently hung up their clogs. There are many photos of their exploits over the years. “We were past it and there were no young lads interested,” says one of them when I ask why they gave up. The regular beers are Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and Theakston’s Black Bull Bitter (a rarity in this part of the world), plus a guest.
