Visited recently with some elderly relatives and my toddler son, and was disappointed, and rather surprised, to find that the Calleva Arms does not have disabled access toilets or baby change facilities! It looks as if it's had a bit of a make-over recently with lots of trendy new large armchair style seating, but these were far too low for elderly people to comfortably get in and out of, and too low to eat a meal from! They look funky and modern, but not very practical! My son needed a nappy change shortly after arriving, which I had to do with him balanced on the side next to the sink, which wasn't easy or very pleasant for either of us! The food was ok, nothing to rave about, and certainly really worth rushing back again for. There wasn't a huge amount of choice on the menu and my Waldorf Salad was disappointing as it didn't contain several of the ingredients stated on the menu (maybe they'd run out of them on that day, but they should have said so!). A real shame, as the location of the pub is lovely in the beautiful village of Silchester, but rather than being a family-friendly pub, they're trying to be a bit 'bistro' I feel, and it simply doesn't work in such a rural location. pepsi1968 - 29 Mar 2012 14:38
We have been to the Calleva for a drink and meal quite often. Reasonable selection of beers and excellent food. beernut - 6 Mar 2012 21:39
Decor and ambience good, interesting artefacts on the ceiling and walls. Beer range fairly good and all of good quality. Food average. arferjob - 21 Feb 2011 22:03
We visited this place last week, oh dear. So sad to see that it has gone down hill so badly since our last visit about 18 mths ago. Food was shocking - microwave mushroom starter (all water, presumably from being frozen, and no garlic) and processed fish main. They also have perhaps Berkshire's most unfriendly young man behind the bar, he waddles about the place and huffs and puffs, everything is too much trouble for him. Nope, not great and won't be going back again for another 18 mths. Shame, because this place used to be great. Pub_Pilgrim - 18 Aug 2010 23:24
This is a large pub overlooking the green which we visited for lunch. The Fullers ales were for the most part ok, with one exception, which was exchanged without fuss. My steak , ale and butterbean pie had plenty of meat in it, although the fries had dried out a bit. Reasonable food at a fair price with good beer. An ok pub. Hellskitchen - 11 May 2010 14:10
