user reviews of the Travellers Rest, Caerphilly

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Thatchers were hard at work, replacing the roof today. I suppose that there's always a bit of a "rush" on, at Bank Holiday weekends (yes, wordplay is permitted on BITE).

If you go inside, then you'll need to sit if you're more than five feet nine inches tall, the ceilings being generally that low.

It's part of the Vintage Inns chain, so you probably know what to expect, but mother-in-law was fairly content in the garden with her Sunday lunch, and that's not to be underestimated.

Doom Bar, Pride, and Rev James Gold waited, as coiled springs for us at the bar.

Six-out-of-ten, I think, comrades.

The Travelers rest is a lovely pub on Caerphilly mountain. It was probably an old cottage or farm house years ago and has a lovely thatched roof, it has been extended but has retained and great features inside like the old fire places which would be lovely to sit around on a cold winter day.

We called here for lunch after exploring the nearby ruins of Morgraig Castle which is in the woods just off the carpark.

I had Chicken piri piri which was served with chips and some Veg, it consisted of 2 small chicken breasts with a piri piri sauce, the chicken was quite dry were there was no sauce but the Piri Piri sauce although not very spicy (to my taste's) was lovely.

My friend had a lovely looking open chicken pie with chips and peas.
and all in all it was a nice meal .

Very popular resturant style pub at the top of caerphilly mountain, ideal for walkers but wouldn't mission it up there otherwise, average choice (usually of 3) of well kept but mainstream cask ales.
