A funny thing has happened to The Railway - over the last five years or so it's gone from being one of the least good pubs in Cheam, to the best! Simply because all the others have had all character, atmosphere, and distictiveness (and even the locals) ripped out of them in the name of 'refurbishment'. Meanwhile The Railway has remained as it always was - an unassumming, fairly uninteresting standard local pub. The only change has been the awful red walls and ceiling have been painted white, giving a more airy feel, and there are year-round fairy lights round the top of the bar area(why?). There's a group of locals, which is comforting - any half-decent pub should have them - harmless old lags who've been going here for twenty plus years, and the bar staff seem friendly. discerningdan - 21 Feb 2008 19:01
Jury's out on this pub. Pretty middling. Beer and service good and atmosphere reasonable. Spoilt by customer bringing in his 5 year old boy and leaving him on his own whilst drinking at the other end of the bar. lyeemoon - 26 Jan 2008 20:17
While this pub can be quite cliquey its a welcome change from the winebar attitude where one is crossquestioned what one had for breakfast before even taking a sip.Its either that or being bored to tears about the latest gossip or the antics of the barmy bloody army.Who cares? There was a lively local crowd here and service was as quick as some of the wit.We actually enjoyed the atmosphere.Just the tonic before or after a train journey. We'll be back for more of same!Much improved! livelyjoe - 18 Jan 2008 01:21
