Nice pub for a quick pint or two! The food is slightly better than other wetherspoons in Birmingham city centre, but can still be a bit hit and miss. Get's very busy when a show is on at the Hippodrome, which ultimately makes getting in the door very difficult, let alone getting served. Worth a visit, as it is new and a lot nicer than other wetherspoons in the area. Note - those small people of the population may struggle in this pub as the bar is about 5, 5" tall! apple_scruff_uk - 17 Jun 2009 18:45
Called in again last week. No beer. Handpumps say they had Purity Gold and Pompey Royal amongst others, but they didn't really have any. Not happy, down goes the rating. ROBCamra - 9 Jun 2009 11:42
This is quite a smart JDW with stone floors and a lot of wood around the place. It was quite busy when I visited around 8 on Wednesday but there were enough staff on, so I didn’t have to wait. The girl who served me was very pleasant and chatty and poured a pint perfectly, including letting it settle and topping it up without me having to ask. The beer festival was on and I had a pint of the Sinebrychoff Porter which at 6.2% was rocket fuel. It was very tasty, although it took me quite a while to drink it. It’s pretty good for a Wetherspoons is this place. ROBCamra - 30 Apr 2009 11:11
nicer than your average spoons, but seemingly with a lesser choice of the old ales. I've liked the layout of this place since it was Pat O'Connels before Oneills, if anyone remembers when it was Pat O'Connels it's more than that in decor now. It's more comfrtable than the square peg of figure of 8, but still feels very wetherspoonsy, although i imagine thats something to do with it being a wetherspoons. It's ok if you're passing on the way to somewhere good but don't make any great effort to go there. mattyboy - 31 Mar 2009 15:04
A superior Wetherspoons (which isn't saying very much I know) but with the irritating tendency of running out of it's guest beers. It has the compensatory inclusion of Amstell lager (about the only fizzy drink I can stomach), but the hit-and-miss stocking of advertised guests seems to be a standard problem with Spoon pubs of late. On the plus side I've rarely seen it so busy that you despair of ever being served (unlike othet Spoon outlets countrywide), the staff readily exhibit a degree of personality and engagement with their customers, the food is fine, and the atmosphere is relaxed and civilised. On a good night this is a handy stopping off place on your way to the lovely little Lamp Tavern. ILooklikeme - 22 Oct 2008 20:50
