| Our Kent Kit Car Club meet there as usual on the last Friday evening of each month, only to find last Friday a removal truck outside and the place closed. "Two of the management teams are real ale buffs" but not businessmen perhaps? We are now looking for a real ale pub in the area with a function room and a carpark, but with no risk of it shutting. | I write further to my earlier comment, and I write as a local who attends this pub fairly regularly, although would not regard myself as a regular. We had seen the beer festival of 8-10 July advertised all around Lenham, Sandway and Harrietsham, so mysef and my pregnant girlfriend thought we would pop in for a drink and a bit of dinner on the Saturday evening. We were very disappointed that the pub asked us for a £6 entry fee (which I certainly did not see advertised on the numerous signs around the villages), as we only wanted to pop in for a quick drink and a bit of food (in my case to sample a couple of pints of the festival beer). I presumed that the whole idea of the beer festival would have been to get locals like us to attend the pub more regulary, rather than make money from entry fees? I have attended the Medway and Kent beer festivals previously, who offer over a hundred ales, and they only charge about £3! Anyway, the net result was that we ended up taking out custom to the Red Lion in Lenham and spent over £50 on a meal and drinks. I would have liked to have seen if the new management had continued its improvement of the pub further, but won't bother now, which is disappointing, given that this pub is our local, being under a mile away! | I agree with the last posting about tired furniture but as a regular at the pub it is so good that people are beginning to recognise the efforts that the two new managers are putting into the beers and food at the place. I don't mind a tired table if the beer on it is good!! Just to let everyone know, the pub has a beer festival on the 8th 9th 10th July with music on each day. It promises to be a good event and I hear they are even putting on camping for the event and breakfasts! I may be biased as a regular but it is so good to see my local doing well because if i look back six months before the new guys got involved I honestly though it would shut. | I agree with the last comment that the new management seem to be turning around this pub, but there is still some way to go. When I visited last two days ago, there were three decent Whistable brewery ales on tap. I tried the bittter equivalent and a stronger pale ale. Both were kept well and tasty. I have had Sunday lunch there - the first time some months back, which was average. However, I had the Sunday lunch two days ago, which was delicious, and you also had the option of alternatives to roast meat, such as pie, which not all local pubs in the area do. The setting is excellent and the building nice, however it could do with a refurb inside as the decor and furniture is strange and a bit tired. SteveTreacle - 19 Apr 2011 14:28 |
| Recently under new management and gradually rebuilding a solid client base. This pub has three handpumps serving beers from the nearby Whistable Brewery. Two of the management team are keen ale buffs and the beers have been very good of late. It has a Tex-Mex theme to the menu as well as serving good ole pub grub. Sunday lunch is also very good value.. If you visit on a Thursday evening or lunchtime on the second Sunday of the month, you may catch a glimpse of the Fabulous Seven Champions Molly Dancers who have adopted the pub as their base of operations.
