First visit since pub reopened after flood. Structurally unchanged but the bar has been replaced with a more open, modern one whilst all bench seating is new. Comfortably furnished and lit; divided into three main drinking areas. Walls in main bar adorned with photographs from a local competition/exhibition on at the time. Impressive beer lineup; Twelve handpumps dispense up to 10 beers and two ciders, four ales were from the nearby Sheffield Brewing Company. All beers I tried were very well kept, and priced between £2 and £2.40. Live accoustic music staged most Fridays and some Saturdays: on my visit blues guitarrist Jim O'Mahoney was covering the likes of Bob Dylan and Ry Cooder. Check with pub for next gig, or see their website gardenersrest dot com. Very friendly welcoming staff, with a determination to make this pub a success; I was very pleased to see it reopened and it deserves to succeed. lad_newton - 7 Feb 2010 12:49
Good choice of ales and manages to have a pretty good atmosphere for saying it's relatively out on a limb in an industrial area. I suppose, the proximity (10/15 minute walk) to lots of other fine hostelries helps. When we were there there was an impromptu singsong by some really good singers, as well as a huge buffet that was meant for morris dancers but was enough to feed everyone in the pub! Not to mention a party of beer tickers dressed up as their favourite tipple - I can definitely remember a Spitfire and Green(e) King. (Was that you Gill?) I don't suppose all these random shenanigans happen every night, but I intend to do some more investigating! soupcon - 3 Feb 2010 23:20
Enjoyed another visit to this excellent pub on Friday, and settled in the conservatory with friends. All theor own local brews were available but I chose a couple of micros, Yard of Ale Tards Ahead and Fox Warrior. gillhalfpint - 18 Jan 2010 09:39
Had been looking forward to the reopening and not disappointed. Clearly just refurbished, it's bright and airy whilst retaining the atmosphere of a proper traditional boozer. Two rooms, the large bar room and a smaller room to the left as you enter. Also a conservatory area and riverside patio at the back. Impressive abstract paintings of Sheffield cover the walls, and these are for sale. Pleased to report that the bar billiards table is alive and well and sits proudly in the bar room. No piped music or any distractions which gives the place a timeless feel. 3 beers from the Sheffield brewery (brewed here), Crucible Best, Paradise Pale and Sheffield Porter, plus 4 from other microbreweries around the country. Quiet on my visit but I bet it gets bustling. Well worth the walk from the centre and an integral part of the Valley of Beer trail. Not to be missed. Carlurmston - 30 Dec 2009 13:00
I think it is so great to be able to write reviews about this pub that re-opened last month after a couple of years closure due to the Sheffield floods. This was our 4th pub on the tour round for the beer tickers pre Xmas fest and great to be back again. Enjoyed Monty's Midnight, Great Orme Whiteout, Brewdog Equity for Punks and Ironbridge Hickockgold. Lovely pub and great atmosphere. gillhalfpint - 21 Dec 2009 16:48
