Quite amazing for a themed chain pub attached to a motel. Goods beers, kept well, very thorough and pleasent staff, and really good food for this end of the market, I'd even go to say the best pub grub for a long time, not discounting gastro pubs of course. Excellent value throughout.

This pub does most of its trade on the food side - and presumably relies a lot on the hotel that adjoins it.

The food can actually be pretty good - it conforms to some Chef & Brewer chain menu I think, but its usually well executed and a cut above the usual freezer/microwave chain-pub fayre, and most of the staff are helpful and attentive. Judged purely on the food, its probably a bit better than The Plough nextdoor.

Prices are maybe a touch higher than some of the more down-to-earth establishments around, but this is on the fringes of the countryside, and attracts business travellers and folk who want a short semi-rural jaunt.

The setting is pleasant enough, and manages to feel comfortable and warm in spite of being only a few years old.

They do have a couple of ales on, although the choice is far from exotic, and I'm not convinced they know how to look after them. Better than nowt though.

There's an outdoor area which might be pleasant in the summer. I can't say much more about it though, as I've only been a regular visitor since the leaves started falling.

Whole-heartedly agree with the last poster's comments. Lovely-looking pub but staff are utterly disinterested and the food is inedible. Complained about the food once - the highlight being a mouldy lemon served with a salmon fillet that we didn't even order - and the manager didn't even bother coming to speak to us. Worst meal I've ever had in my life, McDonalds does better food.

I visited 10/06/2009 for a birthday celebration. BIG mistake!!! 1st they had no lime so couldn't have any cocktails so we ordered cokes/lemonades all arrived flat as gas machine not working, complained and returned for J2o's. 2nd - starters FINALLY arrived for 3 of the party of 5 but I then had to go to kitchen after long wait to remind staff we were still waiting for 2 more starters, NOT impressed. 3rd - 2 Steaks arrived mine was very well done instead of medium rare and my wife's steak was virtually cremated. At this point I had had enough and informed manager we were all leaving immediately to which he didn't seem surprised. My advice would be to steer well clear of this restaurant at all costs!!!.

Used to frequent this pub regularly as it was the best food pub within miles of Waltham Abbey and i always enjoyed it. However it has suddenly gone downhill and I think this has a lot to do with the new waiting at the tables whereas before you would just place your order at the bar which was simple and quick. We had decided what to have when the waitress came over to take our order, one of the dishes was unavailable so we had to choose another one. Instead of giving us a couple of minutes she hovered over us looking restless and my husband just ordered something to get rid of her! We had to wait ages for our food which was not made any easier by the fact that a group of male residents from the hotel had come in after us and yet had been served their food really quickly and the waitress seemed more interested in fawning over them instead of doing her job.Obviously she knew that she would get a bigger tip from them than she would from us.The food finally arrived and mine was ok but my husbands steak was tough as boots and was missing the sauce and his chips! We eventually managed to drag the waitress away from the other table to tell her but by the time she had bothered to go to the kitchen i had finished my food and my husband had eaten his steak plain. Won't be returning.
