| Situated just outside Grasmere on the A591 heading up to Dunmail Raise, the Travellers Rest is a really fine pub. It's a long narrow building with an entry in the middle opposite a small bar and with a fire. There's only space for 2 or 3 people to sit here who have to contend with people coming in but it's a great spot to grab. To the left is another room with a pool table and, beyond, a fire and where recently smoking was allowed. But, for my tastes, now it is banned throughout the pub this second room, when the fire is lit, is also a great place for a pint. Rooms to the right become progressively more dining orientated. The beer is a range from Jennings, generally well served. Food is good but too expensive and perhaps too ambitious (the gammon, for example, was good but not £11 good on my last visit; the fish better but very modest).
