Visited this pub on a Saturday lunchtime. It was extremely busy and the car park was full. This is always a good sign that there will be a warm welcome and the food will be passable. Whilst agreeing with the comments about it being more of a restaurant than a pub, I found a very good pint of Bishops Finger and an equally well kept pint of Spitfire. Both of these beers are from Shepherd Neame brewery in Kent. My companion was the landlord of The Hoops in Barton Cambridgeshire. He was impressed with the service and the condition of the beer despite the pub being busy. We selected from the menu and decided upon lamb shank in a red wine sauce. The meal was well cooked and presented. The practice of issuing numbers and calling these out over a tannoy system was, I feel, a little impersonal. However it was functional and certainly saved on staffing numbers required. Food was reasonably priced. I would recommend this pub to anyone wanting a reasonable pint of real ale and a passable, not overly priced meal. Rhode_Runner - 9 Nov 2008 17:45
Have been going to the Alma a several times a year for over 20 years. Tonight was the worst experience. Skate smelt of ammonia and I couldn't eat it, the smell put my husband off his steak and stilton pie. Service really poor-3/4hour wait for dinner from 6.15 pm so not massively busy-we were warned it would be 20 minutes! One of the chefs came out picking her teeth then handling the food. Such a shame- we won't be going back. doddinghurstgal - 29 Sep 2008 20:09
I'm surprised at lesjan's comments, I think that the pub has been a victim of it's own success. It used to be a drinker's pub but then they built the conservatory and now it is a foodie pub - and a good one. Unfortunately the silver surfers, or whatever you call them, have latched onto the place and you often can't get through the door for walking sticks. They probably have a special late offer on as most silver surfers want to be home by eight. Still serves good real ale. HornchurchJohn - 11 Sep 2008 21:08
I have been here four times now and each time I had a good experience. It is more a restuarant than a pub to be honest - you wont find too many people just there for a drink - and serves good homecooked food which I have always really enjoyed. Only downside is the whole 'going to collect your own food', which can be annoying, and the 'pa' system can be a bit hard to hear over the noise of a crowded pub. A decent pub with a few good ales and very nice food. essjaydee - 19 May 2008 14:15
This is a Fawlty towers pub. Too cold to sit in conservatory, and most people had their coats on in the pub. You can't set up a tab, you can't use a card under £15, You can't use the special offer until 8.30 pm although the staff are standing around with nothing to do. you have to go to the right till to order, they give you a number which is then called out on the pa, like a station, then you have to go and get it. the food was like school dinners. I guess the pensioners/customers thought it good value. lesjan - 16 Nov 2007 08:55
