user reviews of the Bull Hotel, Burford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Currently closed for refurbishment.

Not easy to improve upon, as it was drear, souless place before.

From the outside, this pub looks great. But once we got inside it was really disappointing. It didn't look like it had been cleaned since the night before, with dishes left on some of the tables. The food was very poor quality although the price suggested differently! There was only one beer on, GK IPA, which to be fair, tasted fine. The staff were friendly enough and when I complained about the standard of the food the manager happily refunded the cost of the meals. Overall very disappointing.

Having read the previous reviews, I'm really disappointed that we didn't have the same good experience. We stopped here for lunch on a long drive back from a weekend away because it looked promising.

The atmosphere left something to be desired - it was almost totally silent which made us feel rather self-conscious - some music would have been good. The service was OK, nothing to write home about, but the food really let the place down. Rubber tuna, tagliatelle swimming in oil and the "seafood" on the menu was actually sliced crab sticks! At over 13, I thought this was a bit much.

Such a shame because it looks so nice. Very disappointing.

Stopped for lunch with friends on the way through and had a very pleasant surprise. A little worried when I saw it was now part of the burgeoning Greene King empire, but couldn't knock it. Although just the usual GK ales, they were well kept.

The original intention was to just have a sandwich ( which incidentally come with a huge pile of salad and crisps )but we noticed that for the same price we could have a starter off the full menu. What good value, and excellent quality, from very friendly staff. I can particularly recommend the Burford taster plate !!

The final point about the staff is that when one of us asked for some cream to go with coffee, we thought they had forgotten when nothing had appeared five minutes later. Upon giving them a reminder, we were told that she wasn't back yet. Instead of just apologising for a lack of cream, a girl had been sent down the street to get some. How about that for service.

Warm, Friendly and the Oldest Licensed Premises in Burford The Bull Hotel is really worth a visit.Serving 3 well-kept and fine cask Real Ales the staff were welcoming and the food I had was homemade and very reasonable (especially for an expensive area).Try the sticky toffee pudding and custard ! Ruddles Smooth was also on. Top marks because of the staff.
