We had Sunday lunch at the Fur and Feathers today and the food was superb. The beer was very good also, but not Fullers. jazper - 26 Feb 2012 17:05
Fantastic atmosphere, warm and inviting. The food is excellent, with the chef making great use of locally-sourced ingredients where possible. The ales are kept very well and the selection changes regularly, and the pub boasts a fantastic wine selection also. The new Landlord and Lady have certainly made this country pub/restaurant into something special - if you find youself in the area The Fur and Feathers is definitely worth a visit! loubelle - 15 Nov 2011 13:16
This is an excellent country pub and restaurant on the North Hampshire Downs at Herriard between Alton Basingstoke. It is run by the ever helpful Fran and Peter ably supported by cheerful and enthusiastic and attentive Steve, Alex and Lucy - amongst others in the team. The pub serves locally sourced real ale (within approx 30 miles) and where feasible the food is locally sourced. The Herriard pheasant (available in season) is the best I've tasted anywhere - currently it is served as a delightful pheasant pie with mouth watering crispy crust. Other locally sourced game eg; venison, is also available in season. Additional specialiaties include a tasty breast of duck dish - and the crispy chicken with creamy watercress sauce is another excellent dish. Unlike many restaurants you are given a choice of potatoes dauphinoise; creamed; new or French fries. You are also given a choice of vegetables and salads. Eggs come from the chickens reared in the garden (worth showing the kids when the weather is good). The ice cream is the best I've tasted anywhere in the area with changing varities that can include cognac, double swiss chocolate, rum and raisin and cherry. These are elegantly served in an edible basket. The delicious desserts also include a Rhubarb creme brulee, an apple Tarte Tatin and recently an apple and goosberry crumble. There are also special lunch and seasonal menus - and certainly this is a good reliable venue to take family members or business guests. This pub/restaurant is tastefully decorated with light wooden furniture (with various table sizes so they can easily cater for couples and still comfortably seat whole families or parties); rural implements; local photos and even hunting scenes on the curtains! In winter the wood burners add that warm country homely feeling. Fran is a stickler for hygiene - and proudly displays her hygiene certificates - and I trust that a fabricated comment that i noticed on this website, will have been removed. Altogether this pub has been transformed in the past year from a failed pub under Fullers to a new Freehouse and extremely good local pub/restaurant genuinely serving the best quality food in the local area - and at reasonable prices (certainly some nearby pubs/restaurants serve more expensive food that is not anything like as good). Take a look at the Fur and Feathers website http://www.franskitchen.co.uk. Yes I'm local and since Fran and Peter took it over, for the first time I visit it very regularly because it is extremely good! Congratulations Fran and Peter on a highly successful first year! Now they own the Fur and Feathers pub /restaurant - we can look forward a great future for it! dellboyz - 2 Nov 2011 00:20
New Landlady is one of the rudest human beings I have ever met. Made us feel uncomfortable as soon as we arrived. To top it off I found a pubic hair in my mashed potato! There are much much better pubs very close by which I would reccomend (ie The Hoddington Arms Upton Grey or the Royal Oak Lasham). Both serve pube free food. OdihamAntiquities - 18 Oct 2011 17:19
