Well, the food we had seemed to be very good value (but then we do live in the South-East); the service could not have been friendlier or more efficient. The pint of Butcombe I had was in first rate nick, as well. It's an interesting place, designed by Lutyens, in a very attractive setting. Obviously it's food centred, and generally that makes for the kind of pub that I personally am not so keen on - but I liked this place; it was warm, comfortable and friendly, and I'd certainly be happy to go there again if I was in the area. earlydrinker - 8 Feb 2012 16:25
For the price, the food is not of a high standard and the serving staff are not very friendly. The first time i visited this pub, i ordered chips, which were cold. Asking for Ketchup i was given a pot and the waitress left, I started dipping and when she returned was told it's "basic food hygiene" not to dip as the one pot is shared between everybody in the pub - how do i know what the last person to have the pot did to it???... On my second visit a year later this was still the case, with food (not mine) around the sides of the pot... hygienic! bfarthing91 - 14 May 2011 22:37
I visited this pub yesterday having been there in the past. The location is very nice and the staff seem freindly enough. The food was dissapointing though. The starter of pate and toast was ok but the roast beef I had to follow was very overcooked and the roast lamb my friend had was too tough to even bother trying to eat. We decided to have coffee outside afterwards and the barman kindly decided to bring it out for us as none was ready. We got our coffee at the fourth time of asking having been told the coffee meant for us had been "stolen" by someone else???? There was also a barbeque on offer outside but the person cooking this seemed to not know his hygiene requirements as he stood there in his chefs overalls smoking a cigarette. Overall a nice location and building but the food does it no justice, hope it will improve. corvus01 - 23 Aug 2010 09:08
Probably the best pub to take a family in the area. The food is always top and they are very polite and friendly. The food is great value and we have never had a problem here. I would recommend it to people in the Cockington area. Kristian40 - 11 Apr 2009 19:27
Built in the 1930's with retro thatched roof it is an imposing building in a peaceful village that is hidden from mainstream Torquay by a short 15min walk. 3 beers Butcombe, Tribute, London Pride all in excellent condition. Food is well presented and the real sausages creamy mash and gravy were excellent value at £6-50. Lovely gardens, an idyllic peaceful spot and luckily we were staying just round the corner at the equally idyllic Lanscombe House private hotel. Score 8 Saxon_Scooper - 28 Jul 2008 16:02
