| Excellent beer in a proper pub - sadly few and far between in Chelmsford these days. Steve the landlord is a superb bloke and really knows how to look after his beer. My recommendation - go there. People and quality beer are always the most important things in a good pub. baldockbloke - 15 Sep 2010 23:52 |
| Went there for the inaugural beer festival . A good selection of 20+ beers kept in excellent nick. can't comment on the regular beeers are they were not on sale during my visit Didn't try the food but they have pub-grub staples (lasagne, fish & chips etc ) on the board for £5.95 each which seems pretty good value these days I agree withe previous post that the decor is not the best but thats not what I go to a pub for. In conclusion If I was in the area I would probably pop in again. A decent local boozer with friendly staff and customers. DoctorFunk - 2 Aug 2010 17:18 |
The new landlord is indeed making an effort. Gladly he knows more about beer than aesthetic decoration. Ignore the photo - Horrible new colour scheme and pub sign/ lettering font that belongs on Southend sea front. More importantly On to the beer. 4 Handpumps with the totally unoriginal GK IPA , Abbot, Gloom Bar and the excellent Mighty oak Maldon Gold. The latter in excellent condition. Brentwood Brewery Choc-orange on in the tap room to increase the range an admirable addition. Chelmsford Prison is opposite. So the first place to get a decent pint if you are doing time reading this on-line. Or waiting outside to visit a member of the family. I suspect the decoration inside Her Majesty's is slightly better. Verdict : If I lived locally it wouldn't be my regular. On the watch. list.Be brave and replace the GK would be my advice. | New landlord Steve has given the place a makeover (May 2009) and this has improved the image of what was very tired looking pub. Menu is good value pub grub with meal deals giving reasonable discounts for 2/3 meals. At least 3 real ales on offer and all in good condition. nigsad - 18 Jun 2009 22:04 |
