When i visit The Sun i prefer to sit outside weather permitting it's a bit small inside but it looks cosy in winter by the fire, never been tempted to eat there so cant comment on that yet?

Used and abused for post-walking beer and food recently on a very wet bank holiday sunday. Friendly folk, very pleasant beer (two hand-pulls on when we were there) and the food was just what we were after (steak and ale pie, scampi and chips that kind of thing). Service was great despite the place being packed out. Will use again.

Friendly, welcoming kind of pub with a roaring fire. No food when we were there as the kitchen and hotel area were being refurbed. Always five local ales on, in good condition, tho served rather cold.

The best pub for barroom chat in Coniston.

(The public bar is actually quite sizeable, so I think Donnajunkie must be thinking of another pub)

We used this pub on the easier descent from the 'Old Man of Coniston'. A welcome pint of Hawkshead Bitter was just what we needed after a number of hours walking. The visit was earlier this year when the tables outside seemed much nicer than the crowded pub. We also tried some of the pub food as opposed to using the posh hotel restaurant. In fact it seemed like no one was using the hotel restaurant. The food was ok not that impressive, just average pub food.

I finally got round to eating here, in the bar, on a cold Saturday evening in October. There was a reasonable selection of local beer: Hawkshead Bitter, Coniston Bluebird, Black Cat and Wobbly Bob. The food raises an interesting question. I had a Cumbrian sausage with apples, red onions and mushrooms in a slightly sweet sauce and very mildly ‘onioned’ mashed potato. It was delicious: the most spicy Cumbrian sausage I've ever eaten but with a compensating sauce. My partner had a good vegetarian lasagne. The question, however, is whether £12.50 is ever a reasonable price to pay for sausage and mash as a bar meal? There comes a point where one begins to want something a little less rustic or rough and ready at that cost. Still, if a spicy Cumbrian sausage is what I wanted, I’d go back.
