| Very much a throwback to an old fashoned London street corner, it is a pub basically serving people of a certain age from the local area but welcoming enough and unthreatening (one of the regulars had a great laugh when I walked into the Ladies by mistake). The place is clean and tidy but is very basic - the dartboard is as exciting as the entertainment goes, although I did notice some board games behind the bar and some locals were definatly enjoying their game of cards! It is nice have a drink in a pub where you hear yourself think these days and I also liked the displays of old cigarette cads on the walls. The pub has a fair selection of the Sam Smith's range, but unfortunatly all on keg. I had a pint of Stout, which was like a slightly drier version of Draught Guinness and a couple of bottles of Nut Brown Ale which were top notch, but I did notice that the bottled beers were considerably more expensive than the reasonably priced keg beers. My friend raved about the quality of the wheat beer so I think we'll be popping in again when passing. flashharry1965 - 26 Jan 2010 11:25 |
| I wasn’t expecting to find a Sam Smith’s pub here after walking through the estates from New Cross and I have to say that it was a welcome surprise. The barman was very friendly and was getting involved with conversation with the locals which is rare for chain pubs in London. The other clientele was a mix of local residents and Sam Smith fans who had made the trek to have a pint in a relaxed no frills atmosphere. The pub itself is very basic and I think can be best described as looking like an early 1960s terraced house living room. There are three areas around the bar that are barely partitioned off from each other with some old screens and one of these areas houses a dartboard. There is a poster up on the wall that was advertising a meat raffle every Sunday and a darts knockout every Tuesday. There is also a list of sandwiches that are available, which is as far as this pub goes on the food front. I love all of this wallowing in the past when pubs used to be boozers and I have to say that this is one of my favourite SS pubs, even though there is no OBB on hand pump. | I went in here once, was served once. It did not seem that the landlord was too interested in serving me a second pint, and I have not been back. crossfield - 13 Jul 2009 17:37 |

| One of the best pubs in Deptford, no question about it. Great beer (if you dont like Sam Smiths then tough) - the bottled Nut Brown is the nectar of the Gods. Great surroundings - quiet (no crap over noisy juke boxes), just right for conversation, walls lined with books and curios. A real fire on freezing nights and lovely bar staff who bother to take care of you (supplying food when the drinking gets extended, and taxis when it gets late. Plenty of locals, all a bit crazy but friendly as anything. Some of the cooler 'New Deptfordians' starting to find their way here too, but no attitude. Just a pub the way a pub should be Just shows you need to need to cautious taking too much notice of the reviews posted here. On the other hand we want to keep it a secret - so stay away!
