I'm amazed at some of the other comments about this pub. Popped in here last night for the first time as part of a crawl of the local area and found it to be very pleasant. Once you climb the stairs to the door, you'll find a traditional "local" type of pub with plush but taste-free carpet, dark wooden tables and proper old-fashioned seating. The locals seem very friendly and welcoming except those who were just having a quiet pint whilst doing the crossword or watching the large flat screen tellies.
Bar service was well-intentioned but the young lad who served us first seemed somewhat confused by a relatively simple order. Not a long wait though and the beer was fine and whilst not particularly cheap wasn't ridiculously expensive either. Pints of AK and Best were in good nick.
They also have an internet jukebox with volume set at a level that ensures you get value for money and the pub seems comparitively silent whenever it stops, such as when my mate managed to cause the bloody thing to crash on two occasions (sorry!).
Perfect for a quiet pint, a quality jukebox or watching the football. Worth a visit and I certainly saw no signs of the "Facists" described in previous reviews as I certainly wouldn't have been there if I'd have seen them.

Sainbury's social club! Or chav central (not refering to Sainbury's staff) poor atmosphere unless you're the type who 'want's some!" or wants to buy some dodgy gear. It's a McMullen's pub so obviously don't go there if you like your real ale.

Its a common misconception in this area that the Lord Kitchener is a nice local pub...its not! Just like CliveCockfosters said, its full of the notorious local facists and workshy. Its not only the customers which are bad - no worthy ale is on tap and the larger is awful. AVOID!!!

This is a terrible pub, it is often full with the local fascists and local workshy. Avoid at all costs.

Though not technically the nearest pub to where I live in New Barnet, The Lord Kitchener is my local. Unremarkable in some ways, (as a real local should be) you can feel how precious it is, as other pubs like it close down or get "themed". It's a bit pricey, being a McMullans, but it's worth the extra. Decor is run-down 1930's front living room with swirly carpet and tobacco stained walls - but clean. You can smell the mix of furniture polish and beer if you start early. Military pictures and cartoons adorn the walls - in theme with the pub's name - and a big poster of the pointing moustached Kitchener himself - stares at you at one end of the pub. But in no way could the Kitchener be mistaken for a theme pub! Truly authentic. Friendly landlady and her partner. Older crowd, but unpredictable in numbers. Some saturday nights there's only a handful in. Generally quite buzzy though.
