user reviews of the Roebuck Inn, Stevenage

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Best Westen logo on the wall might make your heart sink, but the bar is an excellent, cosy little pubby place with a good choice of ales at fair prices. Coped admirably with the varying demands of West Ham fans watching their side escape relegation on the telly and raucously excited Salisbury City fans on their way to the Conference.

I visited about a month ago, better than I expected. I never looked at this place thinking it would seel real ales, afeter all it's a hotel. Pub part is a small room with small bar and TV. Usually people in there watching football but it's calm. The beer was superb, they had Marstons Pedigree which I haven;t seen in any other pub in and around Stevenage. They also had I think it was 3 other guest ales. I tried a pint of one of them and it was very nice. If your lucky you can sit in the small area between the bar and reception where the fire is as there are sofas there. Outside seeting too but right near busy roads.

Don't even bother going to the brewers fare place across the road unless that's your thing. Instead do what one of the other reviews said and walk up to the Mutual Friend. North Herts Camra HQ, well worth it.

Interesting from EmmaG, I went in on New Years Day and the beer was fine. However, smokey is an understatement, due to its small size I guess, the fire is superb until it gets really going then its too much for the small room! Our Mutual Friend is much better in my view and only a 5 minute walk away.

Frequented by regulars and hotel guests this pub is a bit like someones front room; it's quite small and dark and always smoky. In the winter they have an open fire which makes it quite cosy. Quiz night once a month on a Sunday, don't take it too seriously though, especially if 'Bob' is in! Problems with the beer recently - it seems to be awful all the time, the glasses were blamed to start with but it still hasn't been resolved, I think a major overhaul is in order, not that it seems to worry the regular crowd too much, gives them something to talk about!
