Two roomed pub that had scaffolding around it on our visit. Had quiz night on the Friday. Sam Smiths so you know what you are getting. stoutoforder - 2 Nov 2008 19:46
Must be the cheapest beer in Whitby. Apart from that, nothing notable Andylk - 17 Nov 2007 21:20
Re:steve2905 I couldn't comment on the gammon as I had the mixed grill but my girlfriend said it was the nicest she had ever had. I'm afraid I only like gammon in small quantities, the mixed grill, however, was superb. I beleive the girlfriend previous experience of gammon in a pub was from Wetherspoons and having worked in a Wetherspoons kitchen for 2 years, I can vouch for her having probably only had bad gammon. I think it's a shame you won't visit again, I certainly will. silentbob9484 - 16 Oct 2007 12:55
Before visiting Whitby last week, I checked out all the BITE reviews for the local pubs before selecting the Jolly Sailors … firstly because I enjoy Sam Smith’s OBB, but what really swung it was the comment in the previous review regarding the excellent gammon steak. When I ordered a pint of bitter, the barmaid immediately began pouring a pint of the nitro-keg bitter and when I asked for the hand pump OBB she said it was off. Fortunately a male colleague behind the bar overheard my request and corrected her. The staff not knowing what’s available wasn’t too good a start, but I have to say that the beer was very good. As for food, I ordered the gammon steak. OK, it was nicely presented, but very very ordinary and not particularly well cooked. If it was the same as was served to the previous reviewer, he must have eaten some pretty dreadful gammon steaks in the past. My wife had fish and chips and wasn’t too impressed with her meal either. We opted to eat in the upstairs dining room which has good views of the harbour, but with only one other guy eating, it lacked atmosphere. If we visit Whitby again, the Jolly Sailors won’t be on our itinerary. steve2905 - 7 Oct 2007 16:38
Popped in here for lunch on a visit to Whitby whilst visiting family in Scarborough last Thursday (9th August). Never been in before but I am a regular visitor to Sam Smith's pubs in London. Myself and my fiancee had lunch which we both declared were the tastiest well cooked Mixed Grill and Gammon Steak we had ever tried. Very many compliments to the chef. It was washed down with two pints of perfectly kept and pulled pints of Old Brewery. The staff were very polite and all in all it was a excellent visit. I would recommend the pub to anyone in the area and I will definitely visit again. The pub is a credit to the Sam Smith's brewery silentbob9484 - 15 Aug 2007 13:54
