It's hard to define what makes for a feeling of grace, style or charm are in a pub restaurant: it's something to do with an unpretentiously welcoming atmosphere, a menu which invites curiosity and which gives the impression of undergoing frequent seasonal change. It's to do with a friendly, professional and and informed waiting staff. Don't go here if you expect any of this. Expect a surly reception, loud background muzak, a baldly phrased prix fixe menu, mediocre and priced-up food-with-an-attitude (the ghost of middle-range English hotel fare came to mind in the stock which ruined the watercress soup), and the sort of non-presentation (three blobs of ice cream dumped naked on a long thin plate) which I thought disapeared in the 1950s. "Chef wants to know woss wrong with the soup", the waiter said to my daughter when she failed to finish it. When my mother asked him to "take £80" (including a tip) the off-hand reply was "yeah why not". What a contrast with a score of other places in Oxford.

Such a great shame the manageress has to post positive comments about her own business, whilst at the same time posting derogatory comments about other public houses taking far more money than her own sadly ailing one.

If she concentrated more on better service, higher quality food and better kept real ales than she may also have a successful business similar to that of her extremley good looking superiors!
