user reviews of the Somerset Cocktail Lounge, Marston

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

As noted, The Somerset has been renamed the “Up in Arms” reflecting the local campaign to avoid the closure of the last pub in this part of Oxford. Now run by the Dodo Pub Company – a twist on resurrecting pubs near to extinction. It's been refitted in 'shabby chic' which is slightly ironic as it was derelict for a while and would have barely required the attentions of interior designers to supply 'distressed' furniture and décor. Offering a range of beers, mostly local, plus some bizarre shots together with a straightforward burger / pizza menu it was well-patronised and popular. It only re-opened recently, but let's hope this early success is enduring.

Now the Up In Arms and part of a trio of pubs in Oxford owned by the same people including the Rusty Bicycle and Rickety Press. In the main, it's good - ales are from Arkells (a thumbs down from me for that brewery's pretty lame range) but they did have a couple of good guests on. The food - pizza and burgers - are superior and there is a good garden replete with a ping pong. We visited on the opening weekend and the only low point was the decision to play wallpaper funk at earsplitting volume at 3.30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. The pub is back thanks to a superb campaign from locals which included fundraising events.

The Somerset has had several reincarnations over recent years. The 'For Sale' boards are up again to see if anybody else wants to have a go or will this pub close down forever.
