To put things into a little perspective Gteborg (Gothenburg), Sweden's second largest city has probably got less bars/pubs than Melton Mowbray and the majority are 'themed' Irish/English etc. This is an exception and is probably the only old fashioned Swedish style drinking establishment around. If you like pubs and bars you will invariably end up here if you are in the city. The beer however isn't anything particularly special (no Pripps or Spendrups)... the local draught is Falcon (at SEK47 a pint which is around 4.30). It's bird name and taste were both reminiscent of Kestrel (green) lager (for those of you who remember). The Samuel Adams (at SEK 52 or 4.77) was, I assumed brewed under licence locally as it bore no resemblence to the foaming head pint served at Boston's main railway station. The Staropramen Dark (also at SEK 52) bore more than a passing resemblence to Ansell's keg mild. It is a friendly enough bar with atmosphere, which is sadly lacking in many of the city's other watering holes but I would probably go for the bottled beer on a return visit. Incidentally, l - pronounced url, which is pretty much the standard Scandinavian word for beer, is where the English word ale stems from.

...Well, we were not disappointed! We visited this bar 3 times during our stay and the hospitality just got better and better each time. There is one large table, seating 8-10 people and 11 smaller cafe tables for 2-3 each and you are shoulder to shoulder with everyone else, so you can't help but fall into friendly conversation with whoever is sat next to you. The staff are supremely welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about their beers. I asked for one of their t-shirts on the last visit, priced at about 7.50, and was given it free, together with not being charged full price for the round! You won't find anything like that easily in Britain. Can't wait to go back there, a fully deserved 10/10.

"Ol" is the Swedish word for beer, so it's literally "beer-hall". We are off to Gothenburg in less than four hours time and this place has been high on the agenda for some time. Hope it lives up to the expectation...watch this space...

The oldest remaining `beer hall`, in reality a thoroughly pleasant small pub, is an institution in Gothenburg, and is apparently unchanged in its 104 years. Olhallen, I presume means `Old Hall` and 7 is the street number of its location, easy. They only sell beer so you cant go far wrong, specialising in a good selection of world lagers and even several bottles of English Ales for the purist. The helpful staff and friendly locals ensure that you feel welcome and indeed, go out of the way with their splendid Swedish hospitality (if only some London pubs were like this !). They thankfully dont charge you a cloakroom tax, like most other central Gothenburg bars, and then it is question of getting a table and viewing/meeting some Swedish lovelies. If you are on a brief trip to this city, and want a good chilled night this is the place to come.
